Hi all,
I'm about to get a new Mac, and just realized that it might be possible to play some of the great PC games I've always missed out on. My 1st thought was just to get a new iMac, but would it be beefy enough for me? I'm not looking to play cutting-edge FPS's, so I don't need the uber-machine. But if it's more realistic to get a G5 desktop, maybe I'll consider that as well.
I'd love to play NWN, for example.

Well, I'm not an expert by any means but I do use a mac as my primary computer. If you get a fancy pants dual core mac desktop, you can dual boot it to run windows and the mac OS you've got. Not entirely sure how to do it, but it is possible.
I will also tell you that there are mac versions of NWN, Warcraft and some of the most popular PC Games. Heck, even Fallout and Fallout 2 have mac versions. NWN2 is currently being translated to the mac platform, too. So you don't necessarily have to dual boot to play some of the games you want to run.

Wow, "ask and they shall answer." Thanks guys.
James, I've been fortunate enough to play some games already (Warcraft; Fallout on Mac; Fallout 2 on an old girlfriend's PC). I know NWN is on Mac, but I've had problems finding the expansion packs too. I hope you're correct about NWN2 coming over. As for the dual boot thing, it's integrated into Leopard, which comes out tomorrow (why I've been holding off).
Plenty of RAM memory and a good graphic card I know would be necessary for certain games. Maybe I need to assure I could swap those out easily on an iMac, if needed. The iMac is about half the price of the tower model G5, so it's a big consideration to make.

I remember that Shadows of Undrentide was both mac and PC compatble, but you'll have to check the box for yourself, since my memory may be failing me. I don't think the expansions had mac versions on their own.

In my perhaps distorted memory, there was a boxed set from a Mac publisher (MacPlay?) that had NWN + both expansions. By the time I thought to get out, I couldn't find it anymore. Maybe I should look to see if the "PC" versions are dual-OS discs, since those might be easier to find. Those, being old, would certainly be doable on an iMac I'm sure. Then again, who knows what Vista--if I can stomach having it on my Mac--might do to an older game.

Well, after some more research, I'm giving up on this idea. Even w/ the beast desktop, the Mac Pro, w/ good memory & graphics card...there are still numerous problems running PC games w/ (now integrated into Leopard) BootCamp. Not to mention the added costs of memory, better graphics card than the default, copy of Vista...I'm not paying about $3,000 just for the pleasure of playing some PC games. Which may or may not work that well.
I'll probably just get an iMac and call it good. Leave my pixel gaming to the consoles (and my 42" HDTV). Pretty much the only Mac games I play now are meant for low system requirements anyway (Spiderweb Software "old-school" RPGS). And those play just fine on my old G4 from about 4 years ago.
For that matter, I don't exactly need a new Mac. Just a little reward for busting my hump at work I guess...All work and no play...you get the idea...
