Aussie Digger Killed in Afghanistan and the Casualty is the Truth

The Exchange

So I wake up this morning and turn on the News (Seven Sunrise) and apparently an Aussie Digger has been Killed in Afghanistan, and News Presenter David Kosh is hapilly telling listeners that Afghanistan is not about oil, it is about Keeping the Taliban from ever taking government in Afghanistan Again.

"They kill women who have been Raped!"

Well, lets get it right. By the Second year of war in Afghanistan, we knew this was about securing a corridor of Land through Afghanistan for an Oil Pipeline that runs from Khazakstan through Afghanistan and Pakistan to the Sea Coast.

There is nothing like Prophaganda and Lies from an Authority figure to make you feel all right about overthrowing a Government and proping up a regime that will fail the instant you pull out.

So in memory of the Truth, let us rejoice in the fact that this Aussie Digger, like everyone else who has died in Afghanistan did so that you could afford to drive to work in your petrol powered car.

F#%# the world.

Ditto to Shiny's comment.

I worked with a young man who went to Afghanistan in 2002. He said he spent the whole time guarding said pipeline. He has returned full of disillusion on the whole. He has said he went to fight terrorist and ended guarding a pipeline to make some oil company rich. He was making those comments on public access three to four years ago and publically berated by our local news paper (proudly anti-war at now!!).

Damn!!!
I drove to work today!
I feel guilty!
But I'll drive to work tommorow.

I don't own a car. I ride a bicycle to work and back -- roughly one hour each way. But I still lament that ordinary folk are dying everyday to keep on feeding the world's dependency on oil... and the neo-imperalistic ambitions of nation states intent on pushing global capitalism into its next phase... ah, short-sighted "humanity"...

End of rant.

I don't own a car. I mooch rides. Not really because of the oil crisis, but because speeds over twenty miles per hour scare the S%*$ out of me. Still, though...

It's damn good to find someone else who rides a bike to work. I do it to make sure I don't get *too* chunky, and I keep my legs in shape for class. Ride free or die!

Biking to work, for myself, at least, would require a.) owning a bicicle, and b.) biking upwards of thirty miles per day during the fall, winter, and spring, and seventy miles per day in the summmer. No thanks.

Your job is farther away in the summer? What magical employment is this?

Liberty's Edge

A different job?

People can't handle the truth? Perhaps?

One truth I know is that my country (Australia, but I'm pretty sure it is the same for most on these boards) needs oil otherwise the economy in its entirety will collapse. Goods need to be shipped/trucked/freighted from producer to supplier to consumer otherwise the way of life as we know it will DRASTICALLY change. Trucks, Ships and Rail (using oil) form the backbone of this transport.

Perhaps Australia and the "Coalition of the Willing" as it were can use either "reason" for why the various wars need to be waged. Perhaps a war against a tyrant/terrorist is more palatable for the greater public than a war for securing oil (and thus our continued standard of living)? Either way, I can't help but feel such action is a necessary evil. I don't like it but I suppose I accept it.

And so may another digger rest in peace. Lest we forget.

Best Regards

Daigle tries to stay out of political discussion but fails.

It makes me happy that others know about this pipeline (plans for which were being thrown around in '98) which sat unfinished , due to protests by the Taliban, prior to the war with Afghanistan.

The world really does suck sometimes. The guy was a father of 2 and he had to go out the way he did.

Thank god for all the good things in the world (like roleplaying).

It's my other job--I work at a Boy Scout camp from June until August. During the rest of the year, I work at a TV station.
