As the folks in the back of the line jostle for position in the confines of the tunnel, Ehlissa, Corran, and Veren peer into the enlarged passage ahead. To the left in the shadows, a strange hunched humanoid form is seen dragging what appears to be a bound and subdued person towards a narrow cleft in the tunnel wall to the left. The creature turns, your torchlight catching its eyes.
It has the form of a gangly, long-limbed human but the head is that of a monstrosity. Its eyes are sunken and dark, its nose two vertical slits in its face; but worst of all is its mouth. The mandible is split vertically forming two halves, each rimmed with sharp teeth. A long tongue protrudes from the hideous, gaping maw as spittle flows freely down its jowls. Seeing you, it lurches to a stop, drops its prisoner and swings towards you, legs set to pounce and sharp claws at the ready.
I'm assuming only the first three are in the widened passage. There will not be a map for this battle as the space is just too confining. Attacks with any but light weapons will have a -2 circumstance penalty. For purpose of ranged attacks, just about everyone in assumed to be in melee and once something engages the enemy, it will have cover.

Neither the beastie, nor the metal object (which, now that you look at it appears to be a short sword) radiate any magic. There are auras in the area, however, including the dagger you are holding.
Ehlissa:
The creature locks eyes with you as you challenge it. Momentarily it is distracted and your sword stroke lands true. 5dmg w/ challenge Thick black ichor trails from the wound. Oh good, you haven't been waiting on me TOO long!
Cue music,... Enter the Mage,...
"WHOA, UGLY!" Slidell cries out in alarm as the misshapen creature lands literally atop Salome in the enclosed tunnel. His already wide eyes threaten to bug out of his head when he realizes that HE is the only one within reach of providing immediate rescue.
Somewhere, in the deep, calm recesses of his mind, Slidell hears the voice of his mentor echoing from years ago when his training began.
'Remember the first two rules of casting in combat, Rule #1, Never physically confront the enemy.'
'And what is rule #2 master?'
'NEVER,... PHYSICALLY,... CONFRONT,... THE ENEMY!!!'
Meanwhile, back in the tunnel,...
"WhatinthenameofNethysareyou? Getoffofheryou,...big,...ugly,...THING!" Slidell shouts in a rush, his infamous vocabulary failing him in the moment of stress. Finding that he cannot take a step back without colliding with someone else, he begins quickly but carefully casting a spell while yanking what appears to be a piece of lint from a pocket.
Slidell's concentration roll to cast spell w/out AoO: (1d20 6=21)
I'm only casting a 0-level spell, I'm pretty sure that's a go. :)

"Will somebody kindly step this way, and HIT THIS THING?!?" Slidell asks, a little more calmly than before,...
I know that there is no map, but where the heck are people in relation to these things? It seems like Ehlissa, Corran, Veren, and now Malcolm are engaging monster 1 in the "North." Slidell and Salome are engaging monster 2 in the "South." JSL's last post seems to indicate that Naelah and Vesh are in the middle, but I thought Vesh was in the back. In short, I'm confused.
What is Vesh close enough to attack? Can he move/tumble to get into a flanking position on either creature? Is he close to the metal object and, if so, how close?
SUB_Corran
Using his sword to thrust instead of hack, Corran lunges towards the beast.
Corran attacks Creature #1 with his longsword (1d20+4=17, 1d8+3=8)
JSL
Positions: Thing #1 is backed up towards a tunnel opening where it was trying to drag Ameiko. Ehlissa and Corran have engaged it side-by-side. Malcolm is in another adjacent square. Due to the small size of the room, no one can flank it unless they can somehow push past it into the tunnel beyond. Vesh had to move forward (from second to last position) in order to see Thing #1 or the shiny object, so I have him standing directly behind Ehlissa and Corran. Naelah and Veren are in or around the opening into the wider part of the tunnel, so they are between Vesh and Slidell. As Slidell properly noted, they are preventing him from backing away. Thing #2 is between Slidell and Salome. Salome has just backed away from it and has open tunnel behind her. Vesh has easy access to the shiny object or the canvas bag - both about 5 feet from him. He can also get to Ameiko or attempt a ranged attack (through cover and into melee), but he cannot enter melee with either thing unless someone else withdraws.

Picking up where we left off...
Salome's torch clatters to the ground and rolls aside in a cascade of sparks. It flickers, but continues to burn faintly. The tunnel area is now dimly lit. Conceal 6 (you must beat a 6 on a d20 to confirm a hit).
The monstrous creature leers at Slidell as he completes his spell. The cascade of rainbow light arcs towards it, only to fizzle into nothingness inches from the creature. As Salome lashes out, it pivots, taking a swing of its own, but drawing only air. Her well placed kick connects with the creature's knee as she rolls away and levels her crossbow. It is still on its feet and Salome is now 5' away from it.
Malcolm and Corran's blows brings a howl from the other creature, which seems to nearly buckle before steadying itself and rising. Its sinews ripple under taught skin and its gibbering mandibles flay the air. To your horror, the ichor seeping from its wounds begins to harden and fall to the floor revealing fresh skin.

I lost a rather descriptive post of a rather foolhardy move that Vesh attempts to make when it is his turn. He doesn't have a high enough mod. to tumble past the creature and get into flanking position without drawing a AoO. So, I decided to gamble and attempt to "push past it" as JSL describes by attempting an overrun. I figured, if I'm going to draw an AoO anyways, I might as well try to knock it prone.
Long story short, I rolled a 4 for my strength check. I should know better than to tempt invisible castle. Tempted as I was to let the lost post go without another word, I'm taking the lumps. Besides, the action is in keeping with Vesh's impetuous side. So, unless JSL really flubs his roll, Vesh will soon be lying at Ehlissa and Corran's feet!
The moral of this story being, it's only good to pull an Errol Flynn if you make your die rolls.
Slidell Stormraven
Slidell observes the creatures sneering reaction to his spell with academic interest, seeming to momentarily forget where he is,...
"Fascinating. Either it possesses a natural immunity or resistance to the Art in general, or it is possessed of a higher intelligence than it's bestial appearance would seem to indicate. Either way, that could pose a minor problem. As I came prepared to deal with hordes of diminutive goblins, not these textbook examples of '101 Reasons Mages should never dump their Experiments in City Sewers'! Anybody have any magic weapons handy? I have a scroll here that should help,..." Slidell begins patting his pockets while trying to back slowly away from the thing, but only bumping up against Veren, who is growling at the creature.

Um, Not to be TOO picky, but the wimpy mage would like to clarify one thing. Doesn't the Attack have to EXCEED my AC to hit me? That last att looks like it equals my AC:16. The raven retreating under the dubious protection of Slidell's wide brimmed hat. Slidell makes a face as he waves his hand back and forth in front of his nose.
"Not to add insult to injury, but not only are you ugly, your oral hygiene is seriously lacking."
The creature becomes a whirlwind of claws and teeth, actually drawing sparks from Slidell's mystic shield as he fights to hold off the creature's blows with a dagger that suddenly seems more child's plaything than dangerous weapon.
Seemingly as surprised as the creature that he somehow managed to survive the assault, Slidell Feints an attack, causing the creature to rear back, and Slidell deftly withdraws past Veren, leaving a space open on both sides of the creature.
"Don't mind me, I just need some room to do some proper finger waggling." He smiles at Naelah. "Do you think that Veren can hold it off for a few seconds? Salome! Don't close with it! I'm calling in reinforcements!"
He begins patting his pockets looking for something when he clutches his head and groans. "Oh my, is that the adrenalin fading already? Oh no, tell me it didn't actually bite me!" He begins frantically checking his arms and sleeves,...
Full round to withdraw, no AoO, let me know on the above question and I'll add the damage to my sheet if i have to.

From d20SRD.org: An attack roll represents your attempt to strike your opponent on your turn in a round. When you make an attack roll, you roll a d20 and add your attack bonus. (Other modifiers may also apply to this roll.) If your result equals or beats the target’s Armor Class, you hit and deal damage.

I'll post Vesh in an hour or so. Can you explain the above? I know it has something to with the difference btwn. standard actions, move actions, and full-round actions, but I can't find the rule. Thanks.
A five foot step is a free action that you can take only if you make no other movement in the round. You can still make a "move" action, you just can't use it to move. You can use it to stand up, get an item, redirect a spell, etc, but not move. So if Corran takes a 5' step, he cannot attempt the overrun. As to needing to move, as long as he ends his turn in a legal space, it doesn't matter that he begins his turn or takes actions in an illegal space. So he could have attacked or even full attacked and then taken the 5' step at the end of his turn to get into a legal space.
Vesh
Thanks for the explanation. Sometimes I wonder if 4e will really uncomplicate things, as Wizards claims.

Gritting her teeth, Naelah charges the creature, attempting to grab it and take it down. As she does this, she deliberately tosses Salome's scimitar to the ground behind the creature. Incredibly, she eludes its attack and wraps her arms around its torso, forcing it backwards and off balance into the cavern wall. The creature has been grappled and Naelah is holding it in place until their next turn. It loses its Dex bonus to AC, cannot move, and cannot take AoOs. Also see the spoiler below.
Positions: in the tunnel from back to front: Salome; 5' gap; creature and Naelah; 5' gap; Veren; Slidell. All others are at the entrance to the passage leading left. (about 5-10 feet from Slidell).
To simplify grappling, I propose the following. All grapplers move to the same initiative count. On that count, all grapplers make grapple checks. The winner can elect to 1) do damage as per an unarmed or natural attack or 2) hold the opposition still or 3) move the pile up to half their speed or 4) escape the grapple or 5) take a move-equivalent action. For a -4 penalty, you can attempt to do damage with a light weapon. Basically as the usual grapple rules except everyone acts at the same time and there is no need to win an extra grapple check to pin the opponent.

What is "IC"?
I probably won't get another chance to post during the day today. My plan was to shoot the creature with the crossbow again, but now that Naelah is grappling it, I don't want to shoot into melee and risk injuring her. Would it be possible for Salome to pick up the scimitar and slash the creature with it -- or does that use up too many moves? I'll just post rolls for both scenarios, and JSL can fill in as appropriate.

Would it be possible for Salome to pick up the scimitar and slash the creature with it -- or does that use up too many moves?
Yes, that is Naelah's plan. Use a 5' step to close with the creature, then pick up the weapon as a move action. Normally the creature would get an AoO, but it can't since it is grappled. Then hit it as a standard action.
Scimitar attack; damage, if applicable (1d20+3=21, 1d6+1=5)
Looks like you rolled a natural 18, which threatens a crit with a scimitar. Confirm crit. (1d20+3=12, 1d6+1=2). EDIT: Since Naelah is holding it still, there is a +4 bonus, so the crit confirms. So the creature takes 7 damage.

SUB_Corran
All others are at the entrance to the passage leading left. (about 5-10 feet from Slidell).
Question for JSL:
As I'm "looking" at positions, that 5-10 feet becomes important to Corran. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Corran might be able to use a move action to be next to monster #2 like this:
1. Corran moves from his square (sq) to fallen monster 1's sq,
2. to Vesh's sq,
3. to an empty sq or two,
4. to Slidell's sq,
5. to Veren's sq, and
6. to the empty sq next to creature 2 and Naelah.
So, my question is, is the distance between Vesh and Slidell 5 feet, 10 feet, or a 7.5 foot diagonal or something like that?
Based on the answer to the above, Corran does one of two things:
Option one: Corran, hearing Naelah cry out, turns as the closer monster falls to Malcolm and Ehlissa. He rushes back down the passage past Vesh, Slidell, and Veren to get next to the Naelah as she wrestles the thing on the ground.
Option two: Corran, hearing Naelah cry out, turns as the closer monster falls to Malcolm and Ehlissa. He rushes back down the passage past Vesh, Slidell, and Veren and using his sword like a spear, he thrusts at the pinned creature.
Corran's Longsword attack at +6, -2 for cramped space, +4 for Naelah's pin = 1d20+8=20; 1d8+3=5.

Slidell's next round Fort Save: (1d20 1=3)
ugh! me not feel so good! :P
"Oh. Snap." Slidell says calmly.
Slidell suddenly cries out in pain as he doubles over, sudden fire burning through his body.
" 'Mind over Matter' my skinny arse!" He hisses, beads of sweat standing on his brow, his eyes wide with,... fury?
Forcing himself to stand almost straight, he starts to chant, then breaks off, cursing, as he sees the pile of people that have clustered around the split-jawed horror trying to bring it down.
"What part of DON'T close with the thing do you people not understand?!?" He curses angrily, bending over in obvious pain.
"Fine!" He spits, forcing himself back upright again. He holds up his right hand, thumb and middle finger together, and snaps.
'Shtak!' He spits, snarling.
A loud 'SNAP' is heard next to the creatures' head.
Stopped reading when we started playing it, but if i recall, the poison is supposed to affect our emotions, so playing it that way. :) Casting Sonic Snap (Spell Compendium) 0 lvl spell, 1 point of Damage, no save (unless it has SR) Will save vs DC: 14 or be deafened for 1 round.

The creature's head spins around in response to Slidell's spell. It's eyes are crossed and it is briefly disoriented. Seconds later, Corran crashes down the passage, his sword held level. He deals a swift backhanded blow that opens a bloody gash on the creature's arm.
I think the combat area might be sold out. If Vesh, Malcolm, or Ehlissa want to try to participate, they can, otherwise, I'm going to try to wrap up the fight quickly so no one is left waiting. Meanwhile, they (and only they) can attempt (ha ha) a DC 25 Perception check. Also, keep making those poison saves if applicable. You can also use the time to check out the rest of the room (Search check) or the canvas bag, or try to talk to Ameiko.
Perception DC 25
From the passageway where the first creature fell, you hear faint noises in the distance.
The thing and Naelah continue to struggle. Suddenly it rips free from her grip and delivers a cruel two-handed slash to her chest. Opposed grapple: Naelah to hold, Thing to injure. (1d20+2=12, 1d20+6=15, 1d4+6=10) Thing wins for 10 damage. Naelah slumps to the ground in a widening pool of blood.
I have Naelah at exactly 0 hp, so she is stable, but helpless. I think her sacrifice was worth it as now Salome and Corran flank the enemy and with luck might bring it down this round.

I hope I'm doing this right, because if so, it would be really cool. In a critical hit situation, damage is automatically doubled, not re-rolled, right?
Scimitar attack w/+2 flanking bonus; damage (1d20+5=25, 1d6+1=5)
Confirm critical (1d20+5=18)
Seeing the creature take down the Shoanti girl is just too much for Salome. The exhaustion, frustration, and anger she has managed to keep under control all day finally (and audibly, thanks to a very ill mage, who by the way started her bad day off on a bad note) snap. "HOW DARE YOU!?!" she roars at the creature, rushing with her scimitar catching the last light of the torch and glowing as amber as her eyes. Focusing her strength and rage she expertly slashes the monster's belly and pushes the blade upward into its chest cavity. Dodging flailing claws 5 ft. step, if appropriate, she adds, "I just healed her! And her wolf, too! I will not let some jimmarra destroy my handiwork!"
