So, a few days ago our fellow Paizo poster Jody McAdoo approached me with an idea for an art project: updating/expanding the artwork for the original Temple of Elemental Evil. Since ToEE was the top module for a lot of Dungeon readers and D&D enthusiasts, it is (arguably) somewhat synonymous with Dungeons and Dragons as an experience for many gamers. Even though I've never had the pleasure of playing through the actual modules myself, after reading through the pdf version, I can see that there is easily a wealth of material contained in those pages. In honor of a classic (which has certainly been updated for the current iteration of D&D and will more than likely be updated for the next iteration), I propose a project to my fellow hooded Paizo cultists with artistic (professional, aspiring or amateur) inclinations:
Produce material for a hypothetical updated Temple of Elemental Evil that suits YOUR vision for what it should look like, then post the results here for the rest of us to view/critique or use as visual aids during the game.
Any medium, any size, any subject. NPCs, locations, monsters, equipment.
Do you love 1st edition? Make some pen and ink drawings.
Are you a manga fanatic? Let's see Iuz and Zuggtmoy with superdeformed big eyes and tiny mouths.
Are you an aspiring painter with time on your hands and fond memories of smacking Lareth the Beautiful in the face with a morningstar, shouting,"You ain't so purty no more!!"? Let's see it.
Any medium, any size, any style, any artist, anything in the adventure. Post a link to your work here. Critiques are provided by anyone with time and a constructive opinion. Final deadline: let's say October 1, 2008. Maybe you want these in your portfolio, maybe someone will want to buy a finished piece from you. You never know until you try.

Well, no artsy folks on board just yet, but here's my first thumbnail sketch for approaching the Moathouse from the road. I'll have some character thumbnails at some point in the future as well, plus this when it's kind of finished.

I like it. Nice sketch! I've not played through the original, though have a copy of it on PDF. I also have the computer game based off of it that Atari distributed a couple of years ago. (The one that needs numerous patches to play well, and Mods from the fan community to unlike some areas, like the bordello).
I myself can't contribute to this art project. I've no knack or ability for visual arts (my talents lay in performance arts), but I'll keep an eye out on this thread for updates.
Excited to see what every one comes up with.

There are patches. Some official ones from Atari, some fan made ones (which you may or may not want to risk).
I'm at work right now, so don't have access to the website (and aside from Paizo, don't risk any other surfing). I'll see if I can find the site later tonight after work, I'll post it then.

I got it Lojakz, this is a link to Sorcerer's Place, to the official patches section. They also have a great little walkthrough and a good "tips" section.
Enjoy!

Thanks Fake Healer. Saves me from looking through my bookmarks, and probably discovering that it got deleted, and then growing frothy at the mouth because of it.
I've a hankering to re-install this game now... I might be up later than I'd planned on tonight.Edit: Spelling

cool idea
maybe I can force myself to do something. My problem has always been I'm my own worse critic and if something I'm working on doesnt make me happy with how it's going I trash it.
Pep talk!!
Go for it, please. I'm always willing to give constructive criticism and honestly, every picture goes through a stage (often a long stage) where it looks like garbage. Happens to everyone. You just need to step back from it every now and then and evaluate. Take your time with it; I'm trying to learn to slow down when I work and really think things through. No one makes a great finished picture in one sitting. And the best advice I ever got: if you can draw it/paint it/whatever once, you can do it again. So don't be afraid to erase or paint over something that works if it doesn't work with everything else.

I'm looking forward to this with unspeakable amounts of glee. I too lack the artistic chops to do this, but I remember the place with fond memories. My copy of the original is still around here somewhere. I'd love to see the NPCs in the back updated. Then again, I'm selfish. I created my oldest and favorite character based off of the alu-fiend Darley that has persisted through every edition of the game since ToEE was published, and I'd love to have a more modern picture of her in her human form.

James, Great Idea!
Unfortunatly, I fall into the catagory of "No Talent Hack" when it comes to visuals. I would however like to point everyone in the direction of a website created by one of our fellow Paizo posters.
www.danielrivera.org/maps.htm
I went to his website and was very impressed with his work. I will be running my next campaign in the spring with the adventure Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil as a jumping off point for the group. (Daniels maps may sneak into my game if the players are lucky)
P.S. Love the moathouse sketch. Needs a giant frog waiting to swallow your character lurking just at the edge though! :-)
