Hey all I have just started my second phase in the program. Which is now out patient. If no one minds I would like to join my fellow New York Paizoans, for a night out. Would that be cool with you guys? Also if Some one could Let Baron Arem Heshvaun that I am back around I would like to meet up with him if he still wants to purchase my D&D stuff.

This IS for Friday - let me know folks.
P.S. Tequlia and Iconoclasticsream - you boys still have my # right? I'll be available by txt tomorrow.

Maui Taco is at 5th Ave and 33rd-34th St.
I went to my out patient for the first time today they want mr there from 3 to 9 I walked in 20 min ago. I will not be able to join you guys on Fridays after all. I thought I was going to be there till 5. Sorry I could not make it. If you ever get together on sat or sun I will be able to.

I will be in the city tomorrow, but I won't be able to meet anyone since I'm just staying for the one day. I've eaten at that Maui Taco a few times, actually and my favorite favorite comic book store ever (JHU) is just around the corner. Crazy. If this had started any time last year I would have been in walking distance.

Well, another diabolical meeting of Paizo NYC has come and gone, and this one has left us with a whole lot of new people! Although Iconoclastic wasn't able to join us, it was damn good to see Tequila again, and meet the cool-as-a-cucumber Skooter and Vexer, who I apparently met in a past internet/meetup group life. The timeless topic of what game to play was discussed, and although many people are still interested in a Pathfinder game, the possiblity of an alternative setting just in case Pathfinder isn't able to come to fruition was brought up as well. Here are the genres/settings people are looking for...
Two votes for Order of the Stick-style silliness
One vote for Exalted
Three votes for Pathfinder, one against due to owning a large number of Pathfinder paraphernalia- not a strike against the world itself.
One vote for/offer to run an Age of Worms game
One vote for/offer to run a Ravenloft game
One vote for Star Wars or something leaning more towards science fiction as opposed to fantasy
One vote for something with a good amount of political manuevering
Obviously people threw more than one vote into the ring as we did not have 11 people at the meetup...but I digress. As strange as it sounds, I think one campaign setting has what we are all looking for in one place- and it was right underneath our noses the whole time(although Tequila made a Spot check and noticed the book tucked under my arm as soon as I came downstairs)-- Dragonlance.
Think about it- it has a lot of silliness and irreverant aspects to it(kender, anyone?), but a lot of high, romantic adventure(not exactly like Exalted, but hey..you do get to beat up some folks), more than a few frightening subplots(although nothing even comes close to Ravenloft for pure terror, the overall sense of uneasiness put forth by the Age of Worms could be found in the Amber and Blood storyline of the current Dragonlance story arc), gnomes (lots of psuedoscience there!) and the epic clash of civilizations (I think one of the original Heroes of the Lance was more of a stateswoman than a swashbuckler- it took a lot of maneuvering to get the elves and the dwarves working together!). I think Dragonlance has a lot of what we want and just enough of what we need to create a suitable monthly gaming session! Please, chime in with your thoughts- even if you hate Dragonlance, I think this group could make it work.
Vexer
Ultimately, setting choice is a DM's perq. The first question to ask is what sorts of settings the DM is willing to run. Only after that set of available options is established should the players pick and choose. Player feedback is player feedback, but its the DM's ultimate choice and the players can choose to participate or not.
If Freehold DM wants to run Dragonlance, I'd be willing to give it a shot. But if Iconoclastic is the one running, I'll support whatever setting he wants to run, as long as it isn't a total freakfest and I don't have to pay a buttload of money buying new supplements to get a handle on the fluff.
I'd be happy to play in the Pathfinder world (Golaarion) and I'm okay with participating in a Rise of the Runelords campaign, but as I've already read the first two installments of the latter I'd be rather spoiled for nonplayer info.
Also, remember that we are projecting a once-a-month meet time, so whatever is run will progress at a very slow crawl.

Also, remember that we are projecting a once-a-month meet time, so whatever is run will progress at a very slow crawl.
Not necessarily. Once a month is our 'safe bet' schedule but if everyone involved is up for, say a bi-weekly game, it could theoretically happen. Again, the DM's vote is weighted.
Sorry I left early last night, I had a movie plan with my roommate. On a tangent: I've never seen Nightmare Before Christmas before last night. It's a neat kids film, but why are so many people in love with it?
Btw, who all is part of our yahoo paizo group? There's a couple members who haven't said anything and I don't know who they are, but there are people who haven't joined yet. So if you're serious about this group or know someone who is, join up! I would really like to stop double posting on here.
Anyway, I'm very excited at the prospect of starting a game. Out of the offers to run games, I'm up for any of them. I think Pathfinder and Age of Worms will be a good ol' AP romp, I'd love to try a horror campaign like Ravenloft, and Dragonlance has been a favorite of mine since I read the Chronicles.
I'd be glad to start GMing a game myself in another week or two after I get settled into my new job. An Exalted game would be by-the-book, as I've never played anything like it before. I'm very glad that my Order of the Stick idea got two votes, but I would only be really interested in running that game conditionally. You see, I consider myself an amateur game designer so I like to tinker with the rules, and I like it even more when the players tinker with the rules. In just about any d&d game you can be a dwarven wizard, a halfling tempest or maybe even a warforged warlock. But not many DMs like to mess with the details--a dwarven society devoted to magic, a two-weapon wielder who doesn't require a special class to be effective or a warlock class mod that really reflects a character's unique roots.
I don't expect everyone in the game to play some weird combination of modded races and altered classes, but I do expect everyone to be comfortable with house rules. Whether it's a ban on something that I consider "too cheesy" or a core class mod, I do tinker with the game. The last game I DMed fell apart because one player just couldn't deal with his cleric "sucking" because I wouldn't let him use certain divine feats, and two other players dropping out because they suddenly had "work obligations".
I'm a very flexible and easy-going guy and I'd love to DM a game but if any number of players have issues with my methods, I'd rather that someone else run a game. What happened to you Icon? The kiddies didn't gobble you down did they?
Freehold DM
Ah, Nightmare before Christmas... I never got into it, but I think its appeal is more generational than anything else- the movie came out when I was in high school and most of my friends were on the cusp of maturity. Nightmare Before Christmas had just enough new technology behind it and old fashioned cartoonishness to it to appeal to both sides of our developing minds. That and an enormous number of post-pubescent goth girls really got into the movie, and their boyfriends/husbands probably still encourage them to dress like Lucy for Halloween... .but I digress.
I'm sorry that your last game fell apart over something as silly as feat selection- that's really unfortunate. However, I'm sure we'd all be comfortable with house rules provided we get a chance to sit down and hash them out as a group. I've come up with a simpler way to deal with the two weapon fighting issue myself. In terms of who runs the game, I'm all for running the Dragonlance game, but if anyone else wants to run another setting, I say go for it. I"m not sure about a biweekly game, but you can bet your d20 I'll do my best to be there for every game I can be. Also, we checked out the new Neutral Ground place- it looked a little unfinished, but I think we might be able to enjoy our next meeting at their official grand opening on December 1- they should have their upstairs tabletop-gaming-only area open by then!

Okay, this is pathetic...I suck. I HAVE to run something for the loyal Paizo fans of New York. Let's schedule it for sure! I have loads of free time now that Edge of Anarchy is written. Here's the times I can't do it:
I'm out of town from November 16th to November 21. I'm out of town near Christmas as well, so beginning to Mid December works best for me.
Say the word gents and let me know what your schedule is like and we'll DO IT!!!

December 1st may work well for me...I'll have to double check with the boss - er I mean the missus. I'll post back about this in a couple o' hours.
Edit: Maybe I'll kick us off with a one-shot for now, only cause I have so many groups I run for in NYC, I shouldn't commit to any one campaign just yet - the others would kill me. :-)

I am sadly busy the 1st but the 8th is a go if you guys want!
Nah, there's a convention in town the weekend of the 7-9th, that I'm planning to hit that Saturday (and I think Vexer's working the same convention).
As for gaming, since this is a nascent group, with really differing interests (and schedules), why not try a rotation of one-shot or short-term (2-4 sessions) games? We could try out a few different settings and styles to work out the creative kinks and see what works well for the whole group. If we coordinate the setting & character creation online ahead of time, it should run pretty smoothly, I'd say.
I'll subscribe to that yahoo group, btw, but it might still be handy to post major updates/schedule info here at Paizo.

I think that's a great idea. Since Nick seems all set to DM on the 8th, or thereabouts, we should play his one-shot for a couple sessions. Then another DM will run something new. Rich might want to run an actual campaign, but that's okay--we can have a regular Pathfinder group and then the separate one-shot sessions can be played by whoever happens to be available on those days.

Yeah, I suppose there's always a chance that someone new will see this thread and want to join.

I'm leaving it up to you Nick to decide when and what you want to run. I personally go for anything fantasy, but I've been known to dabble in sci-fi occasionally.
I myself will be posting character creation rules for my own campaign this weekend, so that anyone interested can whip up a character for my Order of the Stickiness game.
Freehold DM
Yeah, the 8th doesn't work very well for me, I'll be slinging *ahem* video games..yeah...that's the ticket...at my friend's booth, provided everything works out well. But it's heartening to see more people posting. I like the idea of one shots and regular game- it does give people a chance to see other styles of DMing as well as giving other people the chance to wear the hat. Here's what we have so far...
Tequila- Coming up with own rules for running an Order of the Stick game- will you be getting the boxed set or just a tabletop homebrew?
Icon- Will be running a semi-regular Pathfinder game
Freehold DM- Will be running a semi-regular(?) Dragonlance game (although I'll be up for a one shot, it's not easy to do with Dragonlance, I don't think since everything is so epic)
Nicolas- Up for running one-shot adventures! Will these be Golarion adventures or something else?
Skooter- Up for Pathfinder, I don't remember him saying anything about running a game..you up for that Skooter?
Vexer- Can run a Ravenloft or age of worms adventure path, both of which could be good for episodic or infrequent runs.
Neither Danny nor Mandisa(w) said anything about running a game- would either of you be up for that?
And that's it so far. I think this could really work- we could have several different games meeting on a monthly basis or just one grand moot where we determine what game can be run depending on who can make it. Sound good?

I'm still alive, folks. The teaching thing has been a little more... intense than usual. I'll explain the chaos in private to anyone who wants to gawk in wild-eyed wonder and then say, "Holy cr*p, I had no idea teachers were like that..."
Still going to run Pathfinder for us. Once a month is hopeful still. If some of you already have the Runelords stuff I can always make some original stuff up.
I'm leaving right now to head to Compleat Strategist to *probably* start my Rise of the Runelords campaign with the kids from my school. Some of them have never played D&D before so I want to run some mock combat first. Let them get the hang of the dice. I'm hoping there will be time to get through the first few combat encounters in Burnt Offerings.
If anyone's around there anyway, or wants to drop by to say hi and see me working my voodoo, I'll be the giant in black surrounded by geeky teens.
(And Nick, when I showed the kids the cover to Hook Mountain and said "The Hills Have Eyes. With ogres." you'd have thought I was Ed Sullivan announcing The Beatles.)

Vexer- Can run a Ravenloft or age of worms adventure path, both of which could be good for episodic or infrequent runs.
Yeah, I could do the occasional 1-3 session one-shot but can't regularly DM something separate from my existing Greyhawk campaign (which could use one or two more regular players, actually). I wouldn't assay Age of Worms unless that was all I was running and it was an ongoing campaign (the whole of it is more than its parts). For running one-shots, I'm pretty flexible about setting and system.

Freehold: I think we should go ahead and start scheduling games, rather than waiting until our next Paizomoot to do so. I’m looking forward to playing a hyperactive kend—erm, I’m looking forward to your Dragonlance campaign.
Icon: I’m always interested in the further adventures of your crazy kids and coworkers and more Gypsy King covers of Hotel California.
Vexer: I for one would love a Ravenloft game, I always thought it sounded like a cool world but never got a chance to try it.
Okay folks, I finally got my homebrew campaign pages up on my site. I’ve named the campaign Riven, just because I like the sound of it. You can find the myriad campaign details here and my house rules here. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to ask me here or to email me at Not_My_Father@yahoo.com.
The campaign will start just as the annual Springfest is getting into full swing in the Shire. Yes, that’s right, the Shire. If you aren’t sick of my constant literary rip-offs by a few sessions into the game, get out from under the rock you’ve been living under! I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of characters everyone will come up with, and remember if you’ve ever wanted to try a new concept or change a game mechanic that you don’t like now is the time! In particular, I love turning prestige classes into base classes because I think that more character concepts should be playable from level one.
I want to start this game as soon as possible, but I also want to have all characters ready before we gather. So I’ll wait and see how many are interested and when they can play before I start scheduling. I can’t wait to start making character for other people’s games and figuring out how to schedule all these games!
Freehold DM
Damn, but I love riven- simple, quick to learn, summed up in three pages- I could learn a thing or three from you! I really look forward to playing the world. The main/human city looks interesting! My only request would be to roll my stats instead of point buying, because..well..I hate point buy. But aside from that, game on.

I'm glad that you like Riven! I wanted to do point buy so that everyone could have their characters ready for session 1; when I allow rolling for scores I always oversee the rolling so that nobody feels like anyone has "cheated". But I have an idea that I think will be a good compromise: Remove 2 4s, 2 5s, 2 6s, 2 7s and 2 8s from a deck of cards. Shuffle the twelve cards up and then deal them out in pairs; these are your ability scores. It is possible to "cheat" with this method but the worst case scenario really isn't very bad.
I invited the players and DM from my bi-weekly group, and the DM said that I need a better sales pitch than "it's an Order of the Stick kinda game". I think he's right, but I suck at selling things. Any ideas? "Lighthearted" and "rules-loose" come to mind, but other than that I'm drawing a blank.
el_skootro
So what's up folks? Is Freehold the only one who likes Riven? Nick, are there any guidelines I should keep in mind to make a character for your game? Are you a by-the-book kinda DM or a 'beg me and maybe I'll take pity' DM?
Sorry. I'm absolutely flooded at work right now. My ability to goof off is at an all-time low...
