Mystic Theurge

I have a little real life discussion going. Can anyone remember this prestige class being used in Dungeon (except for Embril Aloustinai in SCAP)?

[EDIT] Just to clarify: Used by NPC's in Dungeon.

One should use this class...they are very powerful and you can have your party's mystic theurge do the work of two! So a three member party with a Paladin and Ranger/Rogue can work well short handed...so to speak.

I can't think of an example.

I'm not really surprised by that. The Mystic Thuerge is not a very good NPC class. It essentially trades away its most powerful spells for a larger number of spells from a more diverse background. More or less we get the same deal with a Cerbermancer. That can be great for the PCs who, in part anyway, depend on their ability to overcome a fair number of diverse obstacles during the course of an adventure and many of the obstacles encountered are unknown until they have to actually be dealt with. For an adventuring PC these classes offer large numbers of spells which means lots of different options - one of which might be just right for overcoming any specific obstacle.

But NPCs tend to come in two flavours and both of them don't work that well as Mystic Thuerges or Cerbermancers. There is the friendly NPC. Generally this NPC often is just imparting information though he or she might actually do something for the party. In either case the NPCs role is generally limited. Usually the NPC can perform its important task better if its more focused on one class to do so. Furthermore Cerbermancers and Mystic Theurges take up a large 'foot print' in the magazine. Plus their a lot of work to actually design. More then making a single class spell casting NPC (which is itself much more time intensive then making non-spell casters). So making a friendly NPC a Mystic Thuerge has a lot working against it and this NPC is pretty much never needed for the story - a simpler NPC will work just as well or often even better, is easier to make and takes up less of the word count.

Then there are evil bad guy NPCs. Its worth noting that much of the above regarding larger word counts and more complex NPC creation counts for these guys as well but the real kicker here is that the class is weak compared to other choices.

When it comes to combat most encounters - especially in Dungeon - just won't last that long. Spell casters will generally never be able to utilize all their spells in any case. For an NPC bad guy giving up your highest level spells to get access to more spells is nothing but a net loss since you'll never use all your spells either way. Better to have higher level spells to use on the PCs for those all important 3-5 rounds of combat.

So it may be that this class has appeared, but not often and I can't think of an example.

Sovereign Court

I think I read somewhere that Liamae Teslikaria (one of the Jade Raven's from the STAP) eventually becomes a Mystic Theurge. In the latest adventure I completed she's sorcerer/ favored soul. Might make sense for her to go MT. Can't tell you for sure though.

Thank you Jeremy. That's what I thought...

Although Embril Aloustinai (from Strike on Shatterhorn) was a mystic theurge (she lasted 2 rounds when she faced my players), and Kyuss (Dawn of a New Age) was a true necromancer which is a lot like the mystic theurge (he lasted a bit longer than 2 rounds, mostly because he is [was] a god)
