Liberty's Edge

Can anybody explain to me (in idiot terms) the OGL please? I'm interested in making a d20 Modern OGL product, but the lawyerspeak makes my head hurt.

Should I hire my own lawyer, or just wing it and hope for the best?

Also, assuming I make this product, it will be a downloadable PDF. How would I go about getting it sold through the Piazo Store?

Thanks in advance for the help.

In short (and I only THINK I have this straight, others may be more accurate), the OGL or "Open Game License" is the license by which products using the d20 SRD are published. Basically, it means you can publish products using the material in the SRD without acquiring a specific license from WotC, provided that you don't use any of their intellectual property that does not specifically appear in the SRD.

Note that using that little "d20" symbol you see on so many products indicates that you have been specifically licensed to imply a relationship between your product and WotC's rules system. That's a separate thing altogether.

James? Erik? Anybody else wanna clarify if I've got this right?

I have been wondering about all that too.

Specifically the intellectual property aspect. As I understand it, Beholders, Yuan-Ti, Drow and a few others are intellectual property. However, while reading the SRD I noticed Drow are included. So, are the Drow intellectual property or not?

No, they are not. :) Meaning, you can have your own interpretation of drow culture and society in your OGL product, but WotC would come down on you from on high should you use "Lolth", "Beholder", "Illithid", "Yuan-ti", etc in your product.

Actually, it is more like a toddler's step stool.

They can afford lawyers... I can't... So more like a smiting lightning bolt from Zeus...

Thanks guys I had been wondering about them drow for a while. In my OGL version I might make them CG with a small evil cult. Lets face it that is how most Drow PCs are played (CN at worst), so evil ones are rather rare. :) Or the high elves coul have a feast day to celebrate the great battle that destroyed every last drow.... yeah I like that :)
