Working on a new item...

3.5/d20/OGL

Hello all.

Reading through Masters of the Wild ( 3.0 ), I noticed a spell that could prove very useful, provided a slight change. Fire Eyes. It grants the user the ability to see through normal fire, smoke, and fog as if they weren't there.

It's normally a Lv 0 Druid spell. But what would change if the spell allowed for magical fire, smoke, and fog?

And as I've yet to fully grasp the process for creating/pricing magic items; what would say, an earing that had a multiple use/continuous "Greater Fire Eyes" (see above) spell and a once p/day Pyrotechnics spell cost?

I'm making this item for an archer who uses Fog Cloud scrolls, pre-planted smoke sticks, smoking arrows, and Pyrotechnics on an exsisting fire to gain an advantage. Allowing him to fire unhindered on his hapless targets. Not to mention how easy escape will be should an attack fail/he be attacked.

Well, first off I would make the item either a set of lenses or a mask - a magical earring that produces a vision effect is a little odd, and might make the item cost more than it needs to due to the unusual body slot placement. (But, it's your character. If you really want an earring, go for it!)

The price is also greatly affected by how many times per day the item can be used, the strength you want the pyrotechnics spell to be at, etc.

If you have more concrete ideas of daily use, spell strength, etc. we could probably help you out more.

I would compare this with something like maybe darkvision which is a 2nd level wizard spell. The ability to quickly be able to see in/through things that you can throw up at a moments notice and the enemy cannot is pretty powerful. I would put it at least at 2nd level. Even darkvision cannot see through magical darkness. On the other hand, the spell is fairly limiting which is why I would probably keep it at 2nd level.

Let's go with a continuous effect first...

You take spell level x caster level x 2,000 gp for the base price. (page 285 of the DMG)

For a 0 level spell, use 0.5.

So, for a 'slotted' item with a continuous effect of a zero level spell, it would be 0.5 x 1 x 2,000 = 1,000 gp for the base price.

If you go with my suggestion of a 2nd level spell for the spell you have described, you would have -- 2 x 3 x 2,000 = 12,000 gp for the base price.

If you make it an earring (not taking up a normal 'slot') it would be double the cost.

Hope that helps.

Adding to Moff's excellent post, if you also wanted to add pyotechnics 1/day, the DMG also provides guidelines for that:

2nd lvl spell x CL 3rd x 2000 gp = 12,000 gp.
Useable only 1/day instead of continuous = x 1/5 = 2,400 gp.
Muliple powers on the same slot-occupying item = x2, for 4,800 gp.

Final total cost = 16,800 gp (Moff's 12,000 plus the added power).

A wizard with Craft Wondrous Item and the requisite spells would burn 672 xp and 8,400 gp worth of materials to produce these goggles.

Hmmm... I was wondering how to work Lv 0 spells.

So it's 16,000 for the (2nd Lv) continuous version with the one p/day Pyrotechnics, what would it cost if the Greater Fire Eyes was command work activated? Would it change the cost?

Thanks for the help guys.

And I just threw the earring idea out there. Goggles wouldn't really suit the character and he already has Eyes of the Eagle, so his eye slot is taken regardless. What would be an appropriate slot for the above item?

Command word activation doesn't really change the cost unless the number of times per day is less than 5.

The eye slot makes the most sense to me. I might also allow a headband to work for this as well. Any other slot I would probably charge a little extra as it is a bit of an odd placement (boots that allow you to see better?).

Hope that helps.
