I loved these books as a kid and am desperately trying to collect them all now. Anyone else love the pintsized gaul and his faithful companions?

yep; am pretty sure I have all of them; read them all in German first; then found out I could get them in English; love the names; always wanted to have a druid named Getafix; heeh and that poor bard; he rarely gets to join the feast; heeh and the chief name; vitalstatistix is just great, love I live for the names of the Romans too; what a hoot.

I wish I could read them in the original French. Like Tintin, however, the translators are brilliant. To keep the humour and find new puns in such a dense thicket of linguistic legerdemain is no small feat.

I love the national stereotypes and the clever portrayal of different languages.

The names and archetypes are sheer genius.

Does anyone have a complete list of them all or know where to find one? I could do with a checklist. :)

edit: Nevermind I found the wiki page -its very good! :)

k; I can give you list if you need one though

Yeah, I think I have read them all too...the constant puns make it pretty much impossible to translate everything (and some of the references are pretty obscure or local to French culture), but I guess many translations have made at least decent attempt...the names do change a lot.
For example in Finnish the druid is Akvavitix (Akvavit is strong distilled alcohol), the chief is Aladobix (Aladobi is food, sort of meat jelly), his wife Smirgeline, the wife of the fishmonger Amaryllix is Jelousubmarine (almost the same in French, Ielosubmarine), Senilix (the old man) is married to Fanzine...

But great fun indeed.

No one rocks more than Asterix! I fell asleep reading them as a child :)

Hmmm.. Asterix in Pathfinder... sounds like a good forum.

Good to see some other Asterix fans! :)

Cheers -if its not to much trouble for you. :D

Best thing is -I think as a kid I may have only ever read about twenty of them! That means I have loads more to read for the first time!

Does anyone know if they may have different titles in the UK?

what i am not up on is if there are any not translated to English yet; am thinking there are like 30 or 40 that are, but will have to check my stash when i get a chance.

My brothers and I really like Asterix. We first got introduced to him through the cartoons (translated in English, one of the few dubs we really like). One of my brothers liked Asterix so much that he did get the books, and the live action movie with Gerard Depardieu as Obelix.

Wow; there is a live action movie; can you give us some more details; that rocks!
