Evil DM |

If the map is correct, you should be almost to the Temple after following the trail through the dense Q'barran jungle for many long days. The hot sun beats down upon you through the canopy above, and the drone of insects and calls of various jungle animals fill the air. As you slap another swarm of insects away, you notice that the trail ahead grows noticeably wider, and is mostly clear of debris and undergrowth. Two birds, both with vibrant red and purple plumage, take to the air from a nearby tree and fly off.
Make spot checks!

Mender |

Untouched by the insects and unaffected by the scorching heat, Mender marches tall along the jungle path with his companions, taking sure step after sure step. As he was trained to do, he keeps a look out on these foreign surroundings, hoping that no jungle predators stumble upon his group.

Evil DM |

A hiss of air follows a volley of small arrows fired from the brush. You hear your unseen assailants shifting within the foliage, but can see no sign of them.
A pair of arrows fly out of nowhere at Aldren but bounce harmlessly off his armor. Another arrow strikes Hathir, piercing through the elf's shiftweave garment and into his flesh. Mere moments later, a feeling of intense sickness grips the illusionist.
Hathir takes 8 damage, and must now make a Fortitude save. Everyone roll initiative, and take a moment to describe where you are standing in relation to the rest of the party.

Aldren d'Deneith |

Init: 12 + 1 = 13
"Ambush! Stay together!" The defender calls out as he raises his shield against the incoming attacks.
Aldren would've been at the front of the group, slashing through foliage with his axe. He's still got it in his hand right now. Which direction did the arrows come from? Directly ahead or from one of the sides?

Mender |

Mender is caught completely off-guard by the sudden attack, and is now attempting to collect his thoughts in order to enter the fray.
Initiative: 2 + 1 = 3
Mender would most likely be standing around the middle of the group, a few feet behind the Deneith defender.

Kaezen d'Orien |

Initiative (1d20+3=14)
Kaezen would most likely have been up near the front, just behind Aldren. Normally he'd take point, but in the jungle I'd let Aldren in his heavy armor cut us a path.
With my spot check earlier, did I detect where the arrows are coming from?

Hathir d'Thuranni |

Initiative (1d20+2) = 15
Fort Save (1d20+2) = 18
Hathir would be somewhere behind Aldren and Kaezen and in front of whoever is taking up the rear.
"Myl os ei paer cestol jhojas jhylaes!" Hathir swears, looking down in disbeliefe and clutching at the arrow sticking out of him.
He tries to place himself between the brutes leading this expidition and the ones hidden out there in the jungle. "Poison!" he coughs, trying to surpress a wave of nausia. "The arrows are poisoned!"

Shinus |

Init:13+2=15
Shinus is startled by the sudden break to the serenity of the groups constant rhythm, he hunkers lower to the ground while trying to focus on any noise in the surrounding area.
Shinus will usually be on rear guard for his small size and exceptional spotting abilities will help prevent any rear surprise's, as he was once stepped on by one of the big folk so he tends to stay near the rear or off to the side.

Evil DM |

With my spot check earlier, did I detect where the arrows are coming from?
Unfortunately, nobody was able to see where the arrows came from exactly, but you know that they all came from the jungles ahead of you, from both sides of the trail. On your turns I'll need to you all to make some more spot checks.
Hathir saves vs. the poison.
Initiative Order:
Unknown A - 22
Hathir and Shinus - 15
Kaezen - 14
Aldren - 13
Unknown B - 6
Mender - 3
Another volley of arrows flies out from the thick foliage, this time consisting of four arrows that are targeted at the heavily armored Deneith heir. The arrows seem to be coming from the same place as before: a little ways up and off the path. Three of the small arrows fail to do any damage, but one arrow manages to plunge into an unarmored part of his leg. Blood wells up around the arrow and oozes down to the dark brown earth beneath Aldren's feet. Soon, the injured leg begins to burn and throb as the poison on the arrow's tip seeps into the Deneith heir's veins.
Aldren takes 5 damage and must make a Fort save, and it is now Hathir's turn (Even though you both rolled exactly the same, I'm going with Hathir first only because his name comes first in the alphabet).

Hathir d'Thuranni |

Hathir takes a move action to pull his wand of Enlarge Person from his Haversack, and a standard action to use it on Aldren.
Still gripping the arrow that protrudes from his torso, Hathir reaches back, shoves his free hand into his pack and removes a small slender wand with iron gauntlet for a handle. "Aelasi" he says pointing the wand at Aldren.
Time seems to stand still, just for a moment, and then with an almost imperceptable -thwump- Aldren explodes, doubling in size.

Shinus |

Shinus moves forward and changes into his aerial form and moves 40' down the path about 15' over the heads of the group and makes a spot check Spot (1d20+12)=15 if he sees and attacker he will attack with Fiery Burst 30' range Reflex 17 save 3d6=13 damage
Hearing another flight of arrows and the thud followed by Aldren's grunt he charges forward and jumps and in a flash transforms into a great Eagle and soars further down the path letting out a piercing eagle war cry while looking to both sides for the assailants. A contrail of magical flame trailing from his mouth as he lets out his war cry.
If he sees an attacker he will Fiery Burst them

Kaezen d'Orien |

With poisoned arrows being fired about by hidden snipers in a jungle ambush we walked into, I was starting to get worried about not taking Deflect Arrows as a Monk Bonus feat.
Hathir, Aldren , thanks for the meatshield! If this becomes a trend, I guess I'm going to owe you some Cure Potions of something ;-)

Kaezen d'Orien |

Kaezen quickly glances around Aldren, and then the Dragonmark on his chest glows through his tunic. Quicked Dimension Leap
Appearing 70' down the trail, Kaezen quickly takes a step or two off the path and crouches, hopefully concealed from the snipers by the jungle foliage. Hide 1d20+5 = 15. I'll move around 10' perpendicular to the trail, more if necessary to gain cover.
Peering up and down the trail, Kaezen tries to spot the archers ambushing his friends, while readying a shuriken from his belt pouch. Spot 1d20+10 = 30 (Nat 20!) Perhaps more importantly, Kaezen also attempts to see if any of the snipers are lobbing arrows at his new position.

Hathir d'Thuranni |

Sorry, I seemed to have missed this:
Spot (1d20) = 18
My pleasure on the meat shield thing. Never leave home without one ;).
Hathir swings his head from left to right, quickly scanning the jungle foliage ahead for any sign of their enemy, just as Kaezen disappears. Blast the man! So much for scaring whatever these savages were off...

Aldren d'Deneith |

Save vs. poison: 9 + 7 = 16
Aldren winces from the hit, keeping his head low and his shield high as the wizard's spell enlarges him. While he would be an easier target now, that was preferable to the Deneith guardsman than having his companions be the target of their arrows. Seeing the wizard already in pain, Aldren's Dragonmark flares to life as he activates it's ability on him before stepping closer to the arrow fire. With his increased size, his voice booms like a thunderbolt as he steps forward:
"How dare you attack the charges of House Deneith! Stand forward and face me, you cowards!"
Activating my Dragonmark on Hathir (shield other), stepping 5 feet closer to the source of the arrow fire, and using my knight's challenge as a swift action: Test of Mettle. The Will save DC is 15 if they are within 100 feet of me and have an intelligence of at least 5 as well as a CR no less than 2 lower than my level. If they fail, they can only attack me. Then, for my move action, I will use partial defense (+2 AC).

Evil Genius |

If you got a 4 or higher on your Spot check:
If you got a 9 or higher on your Spot checks:
Aldren saves vs. the poison.
Suddenly, from the north you all hear murmured chanting and rustling through the bushes.
If you succeeded at the first Spot check:
You may make a Spellcraft check if you wish.

Kaezen d'Orien |

DM Questions:
Since I dimension leaped 70' north of Aldren along the trail and then stepped into the bushes to hide, did the Lizardman:
A) Appear to spot me
B) Move through my threatened area and trigger an attack of opportunity?
Did Shinus Fiery Burst one of the Lizardmen?

Mender |

Moving to attempt to take cover from the hail of arrows and to make sure his enemy is within range, Mender draws his crossbow and fires at the only target that he can see: the lizardfolk with the onyx amulet.
Attack roll/Damage roll: (1d20+5=9, 1d8=3)
Disconcerted by the sudden ambush, his aim is not at its best. He calmly draws another bolt and gets ready to load it into his crossbow.

Evil DM |

DM Questions:
** spoiler omitted **
Did Shinus Fiery Burst one of the Lizardmen?
Answers:
The amulet-wearing lizardfolk, not seeing the hidden Orien heir, leaves himself open for attack as he moves through the underbrush.
(As a reminder: All the lizardfolk have concealment due to the underbrush.)
Flying overhead, Shinus spots the enemy lizardfolk, which you all believe to be members of the tribe of poison dusk lizardfolk the group of lizardfolk pilgrims told you about a few days back, which must mean you are close to the temple.
(Shinus may shoot his fiery blast at any of the lizard folk within range, which would be all of them.)
Mender's bolt goes wide and is lost within the underbrush.

Evil DM |

Round 2
Everyone but Mender sees the following:
Another two arrows fly with a hiss from the underbrush, and one hits the Deneith heir.
Aldren takes 6 damage, and must make a Fort save.

Hathir d'Thuranni |

Hathir takes a full round action to cast Sleep on the Lizardfolk to the north - not the one Shinus attacked. Will negates, DC 15.
Hathir traces an intricate pattern in the air before him, all the while whispering, "Maer..." over and over. At each intonation, an almost imperceptable whisp of smoke gently raps itsef around the northern lizardfolk's head before quickly dissapating into the nohingness whence it came.

Shinus |

Shinus will hover in place and attack the same lizard man as the previous round with Fiery Burst again dc 17 reflex 3d6=9 damage
Shinus pulls a wingover and comes down another 5' facing back towards the group and lizards and stops into a hover and spews forth another ball of fire that shoots forth and impacts with another loud thud as it explodes in a 5' burst.
I am assuming that the lizard is still at least partially visible from the last time that he dived out of the way

Evil Genius |

I am assuming that the lizard is still at least partially visible from the last time that he dived out of the way
Yep he's still visible.
The poison dusk lizard folk, still scorched from the last explosion, somehow manages to avoid the brunt of the second explosion.
Hathir, do you mean the lizardfolk with the amulet, or the other one on the east side of the path?

Kaezen d'Orien |

Crap, I forgot to make a my bonus attack from Improved Trip against that Lizardman when I tripped him. Oops.
Kaezen unleashes a flurry of blows against the pendant wearing lizardman that he knocked down early.
"Not so fun when someone sucker punches you, is it?"
1st Attack: 1d20+4+4* = 21
Damage: 1d8+3 = 8
2nd Attack: 1d20+4+4* = 24
Damage: 1d8+3 = 8
*vs prone target
Kaezen circles as he pummels his foe, moving to block the path to the north, thereby trapping the lizardmen between himself and the rest of the party. 5' step to be directly between the Lizardman and where he seemed to be going, which was north along the trail. Making sure I stay adjacent to the prone lizardman so I threaten him
If the Lizardfolk attempts to stand
Trip attack: 1d20+4+4* = 16 Touch
Trip Check: 1d20+7 = 21
Free attack if Trip Sucessful = 1d20+4+4* = 15
Damage: 1d8+3 = 5
*vs prone target

Mender |

Can Mender see the other attacking lizardfolk? Do he need to make another Spot check? If so: Spot check: (1d20-1=0) ... Ouch.
Still disconcerted and oblivious to his surroundings, Mender fits the bolt into his crossbow and draws back the slide, preparing to fire at any of the other lizardfolk who move into clearer view.
Prepare action: If Mender catches a glimpse of one of the other lizardfolk (not the prone one), he will fire his crossbow at it.

Talion09 |

The amulet-wearing poison dusk groans and attempts to stand up. Kaezen takes advantage of the lizardfolk's momentary lack of defense and trips the poison dusk again, following up with a powerful kick to the lizardfolk's abdomen.
Yay Improved Trip vs small creatures!

Actually, Mender can see them. They didn't attempt to hide themselves again after their second actions.

Evil DM |

Even though Mender can see them, they all have concealment from the warforged (and anyone else not right next to them) due to the jungle undergrowth. So, could you roll a 20% miss chance? We'll say that you have to get a 21 or higher on the d100 roll.

Shinus |

Shinus will continue too hover and attack the same lizard man again with his Fiery Burst DC17 Reflex 3d6=12
Clearly the bird looks annoyed with the lizard man as its stays hovering above the path and belches out another ball of flame that speeds towards the lizard man once again and explodes in a 5' fiery burst
I wasn't sure if it was my turn or not as I was waiting for the lizard man that I have been attacking to go

Mender |

Evil Genius |

The lizardfolk grunts in pain as the bolt pierces his burned flesh. He looks about ready to fall over as he draws arrows from his quiver and fires two shots in rapid succession. One arrow flies through the undergrowth and strikes Mender, while the other flies into the air towards Shinus but plunges into a tree limb in the jungle canopy instead.
Mender takes 2 damage.
Now comes Shinus and Hathir's turn :)

I presume that they succeeded against my Knight's Challenge, then? Or were they out of range?

Mender |

I presume that they succeeded against my Knight's Challenge, then? Or were they out of range?
If I recall correctly, the Test of Mettle's effects disappear if anyone besides the knight attacks the affected creature. Since I fired my crossbow at it, the effect wore off for that particular lizardfolk. My bad, I had completely forgotten about it until we played a game here a few days ago with a Knight in the party. Same discussion came up.
