Goblinoid PCs

Rise of the Runelords

My local group of players often likes to make some sort of theme party that comes complete with a story of why they're a group and ancillary goals and so forth. For RotR, it looks like they're making a party consisting entirely of goblinoids.

I, of course, am a kind and generous GM who tries to give the players what they like, so I'm giving this my stamp of approval.

That's actually pretty kewl, especially with the little bugger's (goblins) unique attributes and cultural elements in the Pathfinder world.

Although I imagine they might have a bit of a time attempting to sell schwag and commission magic items ...

The problems I see with this are actually ones I'd encourage, as they will make for some good roleplaying. Perhaps the party comprises some of the "two dozen vagrants and curs" employed by Gorvi (Sandpoint 6-7). What brings them to Sandpoint? Perhaps trying to find out the source of the Seven Tooth Tribe's "wealth." Maybe they got wind of the attack planned by their rival tribe, the Thistletop tribe, and want to undermine their efforts.

Of course, there are comedic possibilities galore during the assault on Sandpoint. Things like one of the PCs chasing an enemy goblin, only to be halted by the relentless pastry throwing of the Avertin women (Sandpoint 21), especially when you add in Alma's reaction once the PCs become heroes.

Goblins fighting goblins ... what's a dog-hating horse-fearing short-attention-span 3-foot humanoid with a fire fetish to do with his buddies ?

Hack off the legs of all the Tall Folk and take thier stuff, burn thier houses to ash ... ahem.

Oh yes, sounds like it will be quite fun. In third edition I've come to quite the fondness for Small characters that don't exactly fit the 'mold'. Next time around in a new campaign I might just see how many of the other players I can badger into making up an entire troupe of malevolent little misfits...

They want to play half-giant goblinoids, which seems perfect for RotR. I'll use the template out of the Advanced Bestiary and let them go from there. This will make them Medium-sized and give them some combat advantages.

I think that these guys will pick up the story in a different spot from where a group of human PCs would. In the latter case, the PCs are hanging around Sandpoint for the dedication of the cathedral. For goblinoids though, they're at home in their caves minding their own business when their chief suddenly gets cowed by some longshanks who wants them to die so that he can go do something in some graveyard.

For the story to continue, all that really needs to happen in Part One is for Nualla to end up with the decayed carcass of Father Tobyn. Maybe the PCs will stand up to Tsuto, such that the Birdcruncher tribe (of which the PCs are members) stays out of the assault (which then fails because of lack of numbers). Maybe they'll strike a deal with Tsuto that they'll sneak in and retrieve the corpse in exchange for some decent payment. (After which he'll become their enemy in some way, possibly by fomenting rebellion within the Birdcrunchers, leading us to Part Three. Or maybe the PCs will just go looking for their buddy, Koruvus.)

If the PCs prevent the attack from ever happening, then Part Two never happens. In that case though the PCs will probably be somewhat welcome in Sandpoint, though looked at a bit askance. Sheriff Hemlock won't need to make the trip to Magnimar for more troops since there's no increased threat.

I'll give the players the ten fun facts about goblins and a handout about the various tribes and local goblin heroes. Equipment is going to be a problem, but I'm considering giving them advanced (ie big enough to carry a Medium-sized goblinoid) goblin dogs.
