Are there any that actually threaten squares (unlike the whip)? I'm trying to work out a concept that can take advantage of a reach weapon and a shield at the same time. Input appreciated, thanks!
Monkey-grip came to mind but iirc it only applies to 1h weapons of a different size category : \

What about the whip dagger (from the Arms & Equipment Guide, I think)? Does that one threaten squares?
It might have in 3.0 but whips in general now are non-threatening.
The DMG has a Kusari-gama, light, exotic weapon, does 1d6(medium sized), slashing, has reach and can strike adjacent foes also (like a spiked chain. Functions in all ways as a spiked chain(tripping, disarming, etc.). It is basically a sickle on a length of chain.FH

Oooh. That's cool. And it's a light, one-handed weapon?

This doesn't quite answer your true question, but you could continue to use the reach weapon two handed and take Improved Buckler Defense. It allows you to keep the shield bonus from a buckler on rounds that you attack.
Hmmm... that might work. What book is it in and what are the prereqs?

A couple of options that may need houserulings to do.
1) Use 3rd edition monkey grip. In the 3rd edition version you could use a two-handed weapon with one hand, and you could only do it for one specific weapon (I believe I am remembering that right). You also take a -2 penalty to do that. So you could use this feat with a normal reach weapon and get to use it one-handed.
2) Convince the DM that all the characteristics of a wrongly sized weapon are maintained. Its weight, its damage type, its crit range, its REACH ;), then use a small sized reach weapon in one hand, with a -2 penalty. I have personally done some number crunching in the past and for a human (or other medium creature) a correctly sized shortspear (medium sized) was better overall than a wrongly sized longspear (small sized) due to the -2 attack penalty. So I know this isn't overpowered, but some DMs may need more convincing than others.

Kusari-gama is the bomb. You know you want it. It can't be denied, its in the DMG! Light weapon. Get 2 and TWF with both having reach. Enlarge person. OMG! 20' reach with TWF. Combat reflexes. God of War anyone?Bodies start piling up and eventually you will gain cover from the wall of the dead that try to get to you! Blood for the Blood God!!!
Weild one and a heavy shield for the extra AC. Start getting the cool shield feats and watch your AC go through the roof as you lash out at anyone within 10' of you. Evil I tell ya, just plan wicked evil......

That's exactly what I was planning. :)
Oh, and Fakey, what's up with this 'weild' nonsense? Have you gone rouge on us?

Complete Warrior p100. The only prereq is shield proficiency.

I thought I just saw a one handed weapon that was like the spiked chain...
Maybe it was in Crown of the Kobold King...
Oh, didn't think of that cause its new.
The Flying Talon- Light, exotic, piercing(3-pronged hook on a length of chain} that has 10' reach, can't be used against adjacent opponents, 1d4 dmg, can disarm or trip and gets a +2 bonus on those attempts.FH
