Master of Assassins question

In the incounter with Ulu-Thurg, the text keeps refering to him and a group of war apes, but the stats look as though it is for one creature. Am I reading this wrong, is this like the mob of fiendish baboons from HTBM, or are there more than 1 war ape in this encounter? How many war ape brutes should be in this encounter?

I seem to recall that he has a pack of like 8 or so of the war apes about. Nasty beasties, although presumably not TOO difficult to manage at the party's nominal level when they run into them.

Hmmm. Good point. Originally the encounter was an EL 22 or 23 and Ulu-Thurg was CR 20. There were either 4 or 8 war apes depending on the party's actions in an earlier encounter that was ultimately cut. Obviously some editorial changes were made since then, not the least of which was Ulu-Thurg's class levels and CR.

I would recommend going with either 4 or 8 war apes depending on the condition the PCs are in. As in the original version if you go with 4 apes, the new EL becomes 22 and 8 apes makes the EL 23.

Well, the whole idea of a howling mini-mob of eight (or more) slobbering demonic war apes is just sooo tantalizing... and a reminder of the ferocity which the scurrilous scaliwags still have as yet to face too.

Bar-lguras get so much love in this AP, it's sick. But they make wonderfully adaptable foes. Slap on some class levels, magic gear, and their pounce/abduction can do the rest.

Ulu-thurg seems like a deadly foe, but I'm thinkin' I'll play around with him, maybe swap out the sorcerer levels for something like shadowcaster or warlock, or--potentially--duskblade.

Love the awakened advanced fiendish dire ape warriors, BTW. (Heh, they should be elite, too.) Reminds me of The Hateful Legacy, which is on my hot list of adventures to run in a one-shot, I hope.

Hmmmm...there could have some influence from there I suppose....
