Sarcem's Return

Shackled City Adventure Path

I'm a little surprised that Jenya doesn't take steps to bring Sarcem back in the aftermath of Flood Season, so this is what I'm running in my game:

Jenya begins to suspect the Church of Wee Jas after they refuse to aid in the use of the Control Water wands at the end of Flood Season. Rather than bringing Sarcem to them to raise, she contacts a friendly druid to perform a reincarnate. With a new body and identity, Sarcem works behind the scenes to determine the threats to Cauldron while Jenya maintains the public face of the church. He might even infiltrate the Temple of Wee Jas to aid the party when they invade.

I don't think there is a friendly druid near the city, but you can play it as you want if it's good for the story.
IMC they think that someone is killing all the High priest and the only one alive is hiding (AMBRIL) because Ike is running the temple.

I had a problem with that, too. In my campaign, Sarcem was an old man who'd dedicated most of his life to both the church of St. Cuthbert and the people Cauldron. He was the driving force behind the Council of Churches and he had the ear of most everybody who was anybody. In a sense, his wisdom and force of personality kept the poltical machine in Cauldron working toward a common good. With him gone, the inmates got to run the asylum, so to speak.

Sarcem was also a widower, whose dear wife had passed a few years back. He missed her dearly and longed to be reunited with her in the afterlife. He left very specific instructions with the church that he was not to be brought back to life via any means -- when it was his time, he was done.

Only now are the PCs seeing the after effects of this rippling through the campaign as Cauldron de-stablizes -- though I'm sure that they haven't connected the two yet.

My response was based on Delvesdeep's mods, in case this doesn't sound exactly canon.

I had Jenya reasonably request the temple of Wee Jas bring him back, but they refused. Jenya personally went to the temple to entreat them for help, and Embril would not even do her the courtesy of seeing her.

Jenya hired the Red Riders to return Sarcem's body to Sasserine for raising, thinking this would be an easy escort job not requiring the PC's. Khyron Bonesworn and the Necrotaunts ambushed them, killing all but one and taking (and destroying) Sarcem's body.

This took care of ol' Sarcem, widened the rift between the churches in Cauldron, introduced Kyron (though his identity is not known), and clued the PC's in that something is truly rotten in Cauldron. The Cagewrights are destabilizing Cauldron's government, the churches, the nobility, and making travel (and thus trade) hazardous, all to keep attention off their real activities and to neutralize the powers that be from taking effective action. It really is sweet. Next, Shibboleth will show up as the head of St. Cuthbert's (to straighten out the Cauldron situation) to undermine Jenya and cause actual war among the churches before he vanishes.
