Pathfinder #1 "Supplemental Information"

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Sovereign Court

So I received my last edition of Dungeon in the mail yesterday and it had "final issue" and all that. Heavy Sigh.

Anyway, I then remembered that I had signed up to get this new Pathfinder thing since I had a bunch of issues still to go. 5 free Pathfinder issues, who could beat that.

So I downloaded the players guide and it's pretty nice. Great artwork.

A question (and sorry if it's been addressed, I don't have the energy to go read all these posts).

A couple places in the players guide it says (in effect) "more details on this in Pathfinder #1"

So, my understanding is that the Pathfinder issues are 50pages of adventure and then 40+ pages of "supplemental information".

So how is it I can share this supplemental information with my players? I'd tell them to buy the Pathfinder book, but of course that's not going to work as it has the adventure in it...

Seems like there's a missed opportunity for sales for Paizo if they'd separate out the supplemental info that's player safe into a pdf or something so I could make my players buy it, rather them me having to print out multiple copies of specific parts of the pdf file.

Has someone already addressed this?

The assumed way of sharing the information in Pathfinder with your players is in play. One of the sections in Pathfinder #1 is a 14 page backdrop on Sandpoint; this provides details for 50+ locations in town, most of which have NPCs and adventure elements built in. You can use the backdrop during play to support encounters with these NPCs or to provide background elements for the adventure or as springboards to expand Sandpoint and add new stuff to it.

Also in the supplemental section of Pathfinder #1 is a history of the ancient lands of Thassilon; most of that is not information for players, but they'll learn something about it as they go through the campaign. There's also six new monsters.

All in all, though, the player's guide itself should handle everything that players need to know to make characters for Rise of the Runelords. The sections that say, "See Pathinder #1 for more details" could just as easilly (and probably should) have said, "See your GM for more details."

Why would they need to do that? As a Pathfinder Subscriber, you get a free PDF of the entire issue - just print what you want to give your players as information and hand it out. Don't tell me that as a DM, you don't enjoy having player handouts???

So, from a business standpoint, what is Paizo offereing on a subscription basis that's Player focused.

As well, from a biz point of view, do you have plans to offer something at a lower price point?

I'm just considering from a "poor college student" point of view the old subs for dungeon and dragon weren't too steep. These new offerings are.

I (being 20-mumble-years from college) can afford it, but you seem to be cutting out a large segment of business and wondered if that was deliberate due to the market these days. Anything at a low pricepoint is pdf and/or online free?

Well, you may be surprised to see the iphones, laptops, cucci handbags, and BMW's that many "poor" college students have. As a professor of these kids, I am always in amazement at what they can afford (or their parents, or how deep in debt they are going). In any event, I would imagine the place for poor "college" kids to go is to WOTC and their new online versions of Dungeon and Dragon magazines.

BTW, one of the ads for Pathfinder says there will be a lot of online support. Can someone clarify what that will be besides the pdf downloads of the books? Thanks in advance...

Oh, yes, being the parent of two college age students, I'm well aware of their spending habits... trust me! Perhaps I should use "poor parents with students in college" as the better example. :-)

Speaking as one of those poor college students, the answer is simple, get a part time job. I pay rent, insurance, bills, tuition, etc. and still have enough to spend on many paizo goodies a month. but that's besides the point. there are many cheap alternatives out there like PDF only books, and free OGL content, which pathfinder is compatable with. and if it is the pathfinder "players material" you're worried about, then just print out that part. instead of getting the print version, get the pdf version (or both, since effectively you're just paying for shipping at that point).

But that is the best advice I can give those poor "kids". get a job.

and if I sound bitter, it's just because I get this complaint almost constantly. "oh pity me. i want to do everyting the rich kids do, but I don't want to get a job..what can i do?" bah!

and for a list of sites with free content:

Spoiler:

I'm not saying there's a lot, but it's easy on the budget.

Don't know what happened, but my previous post disappeared. Here it is, in all its glory:
