Monsterous Humanoid NPCs

Dungeon Magazine General Discussion

When creating monsterous humanoids with character classes, should you start by using the abilities given for the humanoid in the MM, or can you use the ability scores give in the DMG for the class?
Example, a troglodyte has the following stats: Str 10, Dex 9, Con 14, Int 8, Wis10, Cha10. If I am making a troglodyte ranger5, should I use the stats from the DMG of Str 14, Dex 16(4th level bunp), Con 13, Int 10, Wis 12, Cha 8.
How are you handeling this your games?

I start with the Monster Manual as my guideline when adding character levels to monsters. I don't always follow those numbers, though. If I think this particular monster should have greater strength than average, well then I bump it up. I might even max it out depending on how I want to use the NPC.

At the bottom of the Troglodyte entry in the Monster Manual is the information for making a Troglodyte Character. With that information you can generate a character just as you can do so if you instead choose to play a dwarf.

In terms of stats - I'd generally use whatever method the players use for generating characters. You could also use the Common array and the elite array but personally I'd make an elite array that was roughly on par with whatever the players have. If they get a 36 point but then the elite array should equal a 36 point but etc.

Whenever I do up a monster in Dungeon with a character class level, he gets the elite array to his stats; the quick and dirty way to give a monster the elite array is to give him a +4 bonus on 2 stats, a +2 bonus on 2 stats, and a -2 penalty on one stat. Usuaully I leave Intelligence unmodified since that makes it easy on the skills front (you don't have to rebuild the dude's skills if his Intelligence doesn't change).

Thanks guys

By the way Stingraylonnie. When you add -trous to monster you get monstrous. I can't help correcting you since I have taught High School English and feel that it's my duty to help you out, especially since it's such an easily fixed spelling mistake. Otherwise, you might spell it wrong for the rest of your life, and I can't bear the thought of that. ;-)

We get enough of the rogue vs. rouge thing on these messageboards as it is.

Call me petty!
