Side Trek after "Soul Pillars"?

My group have just finished "Secret of the Soul Pillars". The next chapter, "Lords of Oblivion", states characters should be 13th level. However, my group currently looks like this:

4 characters at level 12, 2 characters at level 11:

Al, male Chaos Gnome Sorcerer 6, Wild Mage 3, Fatespinner 3 (with Smoking Eye template)
Evander, male Human Paladin 6, Grey Guard 5
Jared, male Human Abjurer 3, Master Specialist 6, Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil 3
Lardor, male Human Swashbuckler 3, Figher 2, Rogue 7
Santos, male Half-Orc Druid 12
Tayanna, female Human Factotum 11

So, they are behind the expected level for the adventure, and it is recommended to let characters advance to level 14 during the adventure. I know the adventures are intended for six characters, so it's possible my party could be underpowerd for "Lords of Oblivion". However, the characters are optimized by experienced players, some more, some less.

I'm thinking of giving them a small side trek before launching into "Lords of Oblivion", but I'm not really sure if that's really neccessary, so I'm looking for advice here.

Also, is anyone able to recommend an adventure that would fit at this point in the adventure path?

Thanks for your help.

I inserted "Strike on the Rabid Dawn" (Dungeon # 111) after "Secrets of the Soul Pillars".

The PCs discovered a letter by Markosian (the BBEG from Rabid Dawn) in Fetor's notes, in which he explained how he had almost recovered the iron flask that imprisoned one of the older members of the Cagewrights, the demon Nyxthseht. The flask is actually located in a secret vault underneath the temple of the party's cleric, from where it is stolen right before the PCs get back from Karran-Kural. When the master of the lighthouse comes to town looking for help, the PCs are quickly on his tail to (try to) prevent Markosian from releasing the demon ...

I intend on placing a side trek of my own before Lords of Oblivion which reveals Vhalantru's past and true monsterous nature to the party.

My idea is to have them contacted by Lady Ophelha Knowlern who tells them of a strange meeting she had with the Lord Mayor before he disappeared. Ophelha says that late one night the Lord Mayor appeared at her Hollowsky mansion and told her that her parents had once been close friends of his before their untimely death. He seemed very hurried, nervous and almost fearful when he related his situation.

The Lord Mayor says that he began to loose control of the council and more and more frequently Lord Vhalantru had openly opposed him and passed laws of his own creation with the backing of the council. The Lord Mayor had secretly begun to investigate the elusive noble until his agents had disappeared.

Before his agents were silenced, the Lord Mayor had discovered that Lord Vhalantru had originally hailed from Sasserine. In a last ditch effort to find out the truth behind Vhalantru, the Lord Mayor decided to take up the investigation himself.

That was the last time anyone saw the Lord Mayor.

Ophelha asks the party to follow the trail of the Mayor to find out what happened to him and perhaps more about the mysterious Lord Vhalantru.

The party will find the Lord Mayor went to Vhalantru's family estate where they learnt that Vhalantru was a very different person to the one they know but changed only weeks before he left for Cauldron. After he changed one his brothers followed him one night to a old Inn where he lost him. The family tell the party that they had told the Lord Mayor the same story months a go.

travelling to the abandoned Inn will eventually uncover a terrifying truth. Beneath the Inn the party will find out what happened to the real Vhalantru and the Lord Mayor. Here the party uncover a cache of Beholderkin lead by an old beholder.

The elderly beholder takes great delight in telling the party that Vhalantru is really Orbius her greatest servant and takes them for providing their bodies for more suits for her cache to use. After the battle the party find the Lord Mayors body has been turned into a suit similiar to what the Vhalantru now wear.

Armed with this information the party will enter final conflict against Lord Vhalantru with further anticipation, fear and hatred.

Hope this helps

That sounds cool, I might use it. delvesdeep, you have a lot of great ideas. My players also liked your version og the Flood Festival a lot. :-)

Glad to help. Do you mean the Demonskar Ball? If so I'd be interested to hear what happened. :)

Hi,

I would be interested on how they faired against Vettris Bale (sp?)
in Karran Kural (sp?).

Cheers

Actually they didn't have that much of a problem with Vitriss Bale. The Dracolich managed do get the Druid unconscious with a full attack and paralyzed the Paladin with this Gaze, but he had no real chance against their barrage of fire spells, him bing the first monster in a long time without any resistance or immunity agains fire. He had to eat several scorching rays, both empowered and split ray versions and was finally blown up by the druid's fire seed bomb.

They fought Abradius for the second time in the same encounter - he had escaped a day earlier, so they were prepared for his lightnig bolts by casting Mass Resist Energy against both electicity and cold for the environment. So his death frost spells were rather ineffective, and even though he managed to enervate the groups Wizard after his attempt to disintegrate the Wizard failed, he was toast as well once he got caught in a web cast by the Rogue from a wand.

I must add that I upped Vitriss a bit by granting him Unholy Toughness as a bonus ability, bringing his hp total up to 250. The Dracolich template seems quit a pityful thing otherwise.

Hm, isn't "Strike" even more high-level than "Lords"?

i also thought vittris was quite under powered as he only lasted about four rounds being flanked by the party paladin/cleric and an occult slayer .

i also have had to change fetors spell list as i thought he was a one trick pony.why would a necromancer not have any summon undead spells or a spectral hand to deliver his vampiric touch?
anyway hes the only one left standing in the soulpillar room and about to be turned to mush after his several hit and run strikes have left him with only one dimesion door left and few attack spells left.
any hints on how to proceed would be appreciated

Have your run this yet, Delvesdeep? Or wrote it up yet or anything? The body-suits sound horrifically cool. I would like to hear more about this.

My party are halfway through the Test of the Smoking Eye and will return back to find Redgorge under seige. After this I'll take them through the Secrets of the Souls Pillars and then after all that....I'll run them through this little gem.

I am looking forward to when the penny drops for them about the true identity of the seemingly harmless and joval Vhalantru's true identity.

I'll let you know how it goes but if you have any ideas about the side trek let me know
