I read this book, it was about a fantasy detective.
He had this barbarian lady that worked with him; she was 1/3 orc, 1/3 elf, and 1/3 human.
I know that's impossible, but that's what the book said she was.
All this ballyhoo about 1/2 orcs got me thinking about this book.
A quick google search suggests that the Thraxas series of books may be what you are looking for.

I vote for some kind of grafting situation. Maybe her top third is 100% elf, and her bottom third is 100% orc.
You know—it's like what happens when you go hunting with Dick Cheney.

ok; with 3 groups of 3; each group having one of the races females; after 3 generations of controlled breeding you could get one offspring of say 6/16 orc/ 5/16 human 5/16 elf; which is pretty close to a third each; with more generations you could get even closer. At the 4th generation of these offspring you could get a person only .0104 or 1 percent from being a full third of each of the three races, certainly with genetic variation being what it is; this is close enough to consider this person 1/3 of each race and write a book about them; certainly a genetic oddity.; well, I graphed it all out; was fun.
