Questions about 'sharp' wooden swords and using your wings as shield / cover.

3.5/d20/OGL

A player in my game has a wooden sword (he's playing a lawful good paladin type) and uses the sword as a deterrent more than a lethal weapon, however for really dangerous situations in which lethal force must be used etc (and for general coolness) he wishes to have the wooden blade enchanted so it becomes magically 'sharp' on command. How much would this enchantment cost in your opinion?

And at later levels instead of a mount he was wanting the ability to temporally (X amount of times per day or whatever) turn his wings (he's an aassimar with wings) into adamantine so he can do the whole Get behind me! protector bit -using his metal wings as shields for him and whoever is stood by him etc. Any idea on how this might work mechanically?

Liberty's Edge

Let him pay the cost for a Darkwood weapon, and then only have one edge sharp. If he uses the dull side, it counts as a club, doing non-lethal, if he uses the sharp it counts as a sword.

Depending on the setting, Eberronian Bronzewood probably makes more sense mechanically. Anyway just treat it as a special material.

As for the wings:
I'd say, let it have hardness 20 and DR 1/- just as a light armor, and furthermore take the rules for Cover.

Thanks guys. Wheres that bronzewood stuff? Eberron campaign setting book or one of the others? :)

Liberty's Edge

bronzewood, i believe, is in the ECS.

Treat it as a merciful weapon in reverse.

Yeah, I'll second this angle. Merciful allows a normal weapon to deal non-lethal on command. It's a +1 modifier and can be found in the Book of Exalted Deeds.

Actually, it's in the DMG, too. At least in the 3.5e.

'Tis true. Merciful has appeared, in chronological order, in Magic of Faerun, Book of Exalted Deeds, and Dungeon Master's Guide. Conveniently enough, it's also in the SRD.
