It wasn't so bad for me. Class was cancelled that day, so I spent the entire day hanging out with two of my good friends playing Dark Ages Vampire and listening to some of the most damned hilarious Howard Stern rants ever.

I was living in Baltimore at the time, and the reports about missing planes in the area (as well as my stolen bike) provided me with more than enough excuses to not go downtown for work that day, either.

Too bad I didn't know any gamers in the area back then.

Well, I'm really more Hungarian, rather than Bavarian, and my Illuminated status supercedes all other political types, but other than that, yes, you are correct.

Also, good misdirect, Heathansson. You have been promoted to the second degree. Bury your $50,000 2nd degree Illuminatus dues in your back yard. Our underground agents will be contacting you shortly. Or possibly assasinating you. I forget which I told them to do. I'll make sure it's the promotion thing. Really. I'll get right on that.

The problem is that the last election was rigged. Our options were to vote for one s$+!head or another. Kerry wouldn't have been any better, his crap would just be a different color. I've lost a tremendous amount of faith in American government over the last 10 years.

Actually many of us held our nose and voted AGAINST the even worst liberals that your side put up against him - first I must stress that I am NOT a republican. I come from a family of Maryland democrats - and left that party because of 'irresponsible and wasteful legislation' - to paraphraise George Wallace (?) 'there's not a dimes bit of difference between the 2 parties'. As to the original issue: infant stem cell research - all this bill does is not fund it using public funds, which should'nt be a big deal because if it had a future the private sector would JUMP ON IT - they havent, why? Because the future of this technology is in ADULT STEM CELLS - so all this bill is, is just more partisan nonsense from both sides

This statement does not make sense. Could you please clarify your point? There is no such thing as an 'adult' stem cell since stem cells are basically 'unformatted' cells awaiting genetic instructions to determine what type of tissue they develop into. Adults do not have stem cells. All of their tissues are pretty well defined already. Maybe I am misunderstanding your point?

The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral,
begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy.
Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it.
Through violence you may murder the liar,
but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth.
Through violence you may murder the hater,
but you do not murder hate.
In fact, violence merely increases hate.
So it goes.
Returning violence for violence multiplies violence,
adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness:
only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.

Very interesting. I had not heard of this development yet. If this is as available and easily accessable as they seem to indicate on the wiki page, I wonder why embryonic stem cell research is even considered an alternative? By the accounts given through your link, it seems that these 'adult stem cells' are vastly superior to the embryonic ones. There has to be some limiting factor that has prevented this technology from reaching maturity. Still, thank you for the info.

I hear that spelling is in fashion these days too. In fact, just for you and your enlightening posts (and believe me, between the third grade grammar and use of all caps, you've enlightened me in a way I never thought possible, I agree with you in every possible way) I thought I'd dust off an old chestnut that seems particularly applicable:

*knock, knock*

Who's that at the door?

*opens door*

"Hi Sebastian, I'm your friend grammar, spelling, and capitalization! You can call me Mr. Grammar."

"Hi Mr. Grammar! What brings you here?"

"Well Sebastian, I heard the sound of whining and thought I'd investigate it - and wouldn't you know it, there's a rambling post full of improper grammar and misspellings."

"But Mr. Grammar, this is the internet. Do we really need grammar and spelling here? I thought we'd have robots for that!"

"Ho, ho, ho. That's what a lot of people think Sebastian, but the truth is, spelling and grammar are more important here on the internet, not less important. The primary communication method is through the written word, and to the degree that the written word is indecipherable, due to bad spelling, lack of punctuation, or what have you, communication is impaired. That is why you should always take the time to post coherently, otherwise people are likely to disregard your message."

"Ah, shucks, thanks Mr. Grammar. By the way, as long as you're here, could you clarify something for me. What does ROLEplaying mean? I always thought it was roleplaying."

"Ho, ho, ho. You see Sebastian, when someone is being pretentious, they will toss around terms like ROLEplaying and ROLLplaying to show that they play the one true way, the way sanctioned by Gary Gygax when he received the original chainmail rules set directly from Thor. The term doesn't actually mean anything, it's just a way to be judgmental. The same thing applies for posting IN ALL CAPITAL LETTERS to make it sound like YOUR OPINIONS ARE REALLY IMPORTANT. Posting in all caps doesn't somehow infuse your thoughts with relevance, logic, or significance, it just shows that you are capable of moving your pinky over to the caps lock key."

"Thanks Mr. Grammar, this sure has been enlightening."

"Anytime Sebastian, anytime."

Mayr wrote:

I wasn't singling you out, and when I want to single someone out I do so. I've been meaning to say something and it actually was your limited use of all caps that reminded me.

Talking politics and religion usher certain debate, but when people start saying 'you liberals' and 'you conservatives' it presupposes a knowledge that all of us fall into only a few groups. The minute we allow ourselves to get that us-and-them tribal we tend to stop talking to one another and start blasting at each other. When I see someone makes their finer points in all caps I read it as shouting.

Reactionary word vomit had nothing to do with you, May. It had to do with the bumper sticker logic that tends to fill all caps in this post and others.

Considering how you actually meant your points, might I suggest mastering the italics function? go to messageboards and then to the FAQ there and it shows you how. Now that I've learned it, I have to admit that I just can't stop.

Actually, WRT conservatism, I think it's a relative matter. There are people that far to the right who think George IS a left wing touchy-feely kinda guy.

Or like the way when I was in Gainesville, Fl I was a gun toting ultraconservative warmonger who bears watching, but now that I am in Texas I am a pinko bleeding heart that might be a pinko subversive and bears watching.

There has been sufficient funding before, from private industry. None of that was successful. So, in that regard, I completely support the idea that my taxpayer dollars should be put toward adult stem cell research, which has been successful, and kept away from embryonic stem cell research, which has not been successful at all. If private industry wants to keep spending on embryonic stem cell research, more power to them.
