Agreed. I've found that after discussing things like these on the boards with more moderate or conservative posters that don't share my "left wing fairy" point of view (lost the right wing in the war, don't want to talk about it; I fly around in circles it's awful and nauseating) I've had to refine and review my own opinions, which is always a good thing in my mind.
It is pretty easy to avoid discussions that you think are a bit too personal for fear of offending other posters or being offended (which is why I tend not to go in for the religious discussions, besides not having much to add). And I won't call anyone a wimp for doing so (my inner left wing fairy won't let me).
I also consider myself an environmentalist and I am convinced of the global warming arguement, though I have calmed down enough to be willing to look at other points of view. Groups like ELF are just as scary as any group of extremists. It's amazing they haven't killed anyone yet; on purpose or by accident. I've known some scary, militant vegans as well. "Nonviolent resistance doesn't get the job done, so on the way to the rally I grab my soy milk and my gun" feels like a hypocritical "philosophy" for folks that go out of their way to make certain that their diet harms nothing with a functioning degree of sentience. Call me crazy.The problem is that you're creating a false dichotomy and ignoring one important variable: power. They would poison the cookies and send them on thier way.
It didn't take long for gnome preferring cookie consumers to be entirely wiped out, leaving the elves in control of the market and erasing gnomish cookies from memory.

I've actually been escorted bodily out of job interviews, public speaking events and public places due to my vocal opposition to those dirty f%!&ing Keeblers. Yeah, I said it. It's a vast conspiracy; if anyone out there actually believes that ELF will confine themselves to their little tree fort, then they're obviously a bunch of naive elf appeasers. The problem is, this is only partially how science works. Scientific discovery has always been a two-pronged approach: a) trying to further improve old methods to see what other benefits they hold (as you suggest) and b) trying completely new things to see if they hold even greater advances not previously seen before. I expect the whole field of stem cell research came out of b) not a).
Yes, there will be scientists who focus on "what works" and all the power to them. But to tell all those others who can foresee a different way to go sit in the corner is severely handicapping the endeavor.
This is why we have university-level research facilities. If we never try anything new, we will always be stuck with the same old - same old. (No electricity, no light bulbs, no telephone, etc.)

As a dedicated Right Winger I am going to say what all true conservitives say: George Bush is NOT A CONSERVITIVE, and is certainly NOT RIGHT WING - how do I back this up you might ask?
1. GW has increased NON-MILITARY SPENDING through the roof in a time of war - I assure this is not a conservitive position.
2. GW and his rino cronies have saddled America with the biggest entitlement program in history - Mediscare Prescription Drugs - again not a conservitive position.
3. GW has joined with his sometimes allies/enemies on the left (The cape-cod drunk,etc) to attempt to force the WORST peice of legislation down our throats - the amnesity bill (something that 71% to 80% of all americans EVEN latinos are against.)
I assure you my friends that this is not a 'right wing' president. As Gov of Texas, GW was known as a a left of center moderate republican who attempted to unite both sides of the aisle - unfortuntly that is what he is like as a president as well.
As for him being the 'worst thing in American govt since the Civil War' - I have 3 words: JAMES EARL CARTER - 'nuff said.

It wasn't so bad for me. Class was cancelled that day, so I spent the entire day hanging out with two of my good friends playing Dark Ages Vampire and listening to some of the most damned hilarious Howard Stern rants ever.
What I don't understand is why is it that whatever the Democrats support, the Republicans are immediately opposed to it and whatever the Republicans support, the Democrats are against it? I'm sick of the knee-jerk reactions as much as the vitriolic hatred that both extremes have for each other. Not all causes are the sole purvey of one side and not the other. I'm a moderate as are most people, I suspect. This made it very hard to choose who to vote for in the last couple of elections. I wasn't particularly thrilled with the Republican choice, but I couldn't bring myself to vote for Gore or Kerry because they seemed to be all over the map with which causes they back. As it turns out, I was disenfranchised for both of those elections as the polling place could not find my name on the list either time and I didn't vote. For the record I have voted for both Reagan and Clinton.
To get slightly back on topic, would it help if we compromised and only used evil embryos/morulas/blastocysts?
