Pathfinder in the Forgottean Realms

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Now I know that the FR universe is not open content, but I loved the support given for the Age Of Worms for the FR universe. For me one of the most enjoyable things was not throwing dragons, giants etc.. at the players (though that was fun) but integrating the back story with the Realms lore.

The backstory for the Realms was terrific, it actually placed a bigger bad guy above Kyuss, though the players will probably never meet him. What made it even better was the way that the Ebon Triad linked in with 3 of the core gods of the FR world.

Anyway, I could rave for a long time about how much I liked the mixing of FR lore and a generic adventure path to make it truely something unique.

Now I don't expect Paizo to produce similar material in the future as no doubt there will be legal issues. The question is though will the Pathfinder universe be generic enough to allow players to superimpose it on to their own favourite universe, FR, Ebberon etc... ?

If it is then I'm sure the FR fans out there will come together to form a backstory.

Dark Archive

Though Paizo have already confirmed that there can't be official support for FR/GH/Eberron, everything we've heard so far points to things being sufficiently generic that relocating the APs to another setting should be trivial (probably on a par with moving SC/AoW/ST from GH to FR).

I expect it to be very easy, once we're a little way into RotRL, for fans to put together a Pathfinder<->Greyhawk translation that would be quite similar to one that Paizo would put together were they to do so. A Pathfinder<->Realms translation will likely be only marginally trickier, and will appear just as quickly.

I will try Pathfinder for a few months. If it fulfills my gaming needs, then I will continue my subscription; if not, then I will cancel it. I am puzzled as to why "suddenly" a "new" campaign world is needed, especially since Eberron was supposed to be the hot, new campaign setting. Kara-Tur was once trumpeted as the hot, new world, then it was Krynn, then it was Athas (Dark Sun), Spelljammer was the means to tie the various campaign worlds together, yet the old standards of Greyhawk and the Realms continue to exist. Will Varisia have the same longevity as Greyhawk and the Realms? Or will it shrivel up and vanish into the ether just as Harn and the "DragonQuest" world did?

Paizo cannot use anything from Forgotten Realms or Greyhawk, hence the need for a new campaign world. Of course, they could just use random names and places all the time, but where's the fun in that..

Maybe Paizo should do something similar to what WotC with Ebberon and that is, put out a competition to the gaming community to submit a campaign setting where Paizo would announce a winner etc, and have sole license to the setting all for their very own.

And, I do believe that they have already put out a request for Monster submissions too. Time for Paizo to start laying claim to some of its own proprietary goods with regards to settings, monsters etc.

I'm pretty sure that I saw Eric Boyd say that he would be up helping with conversions to FR here on the boards. He did the FR conversions for AoW and I think he's also doing STAP FR conversion.

Problem is, they need the campaign setting for August. At least the start of it. The Eberron search took over a year, if I remember correctly. If they waited until they had found a winner, chances are that they would lose a lot of customers. They need to present a product the very month that Dungeon and Dragon are finished, and they know it.

Besides, it looks like their world (cannot call it Varisia, but what?) is to be developed over time (and APs). This looks very interesting to me, and the fact that they accept submissions also means that we help shape the world. In the end, maybe we all can feel a little like Ed Greenwood?

And yes, Eric Boyd said he would help out with the conversion notes, so since he did them in Dungeon, it would practically be the same. Only difference is that the information is here, on the messageboard, and not an official download. I am not sure, but can WOTC sue Eric if he makes a document out of it and puts it on the web for download? He's not making any money out of it, and chances are that conversion notes = more Realms stuff purchased.

While we're already deeply invested in the process of designing our own campaign setting, and hence aren't interested in submissions for a setting as a whole, there will definitely be several ways for new contributors (and fans on the messageboards!) to leave their mark on our world. We're hoping to get some of the submission criteria worked out shortly, and as soon as we do, we'll let you know.

This is good stuff...very exciting times ahead. I can feel the "winds of change" as standard bearers await amidst an ominous land.

If I'm excited about Paizo, I can only imagine how the folks of Paizo are feeling. Time to stretch those wings!
