What is the best FR book to buy when starting out, besides the campaign settings?

I think the "Players Guide to Faerun" and the "Faiths and Pantheons" are most crucial to a Realms game to me. "Races of Faerun" is a nice extra but you can get 90% of the stuff that is in there out of the various Monster Manuals and FRCS.

I am a big Realms fan and have every printed book that deals with the Forgotten Realms since the original AD&D box set.

Thanks I just got into FR and just based upon the CS and a few library rentals I really like it.

I agree with DMR players, F&P, and then races. I would also recommend the Underdark guide if you plan to head there (always fun), and the good and bad thing about FR is they more than likely have a book totally, completely covering the area you want to adventure in.

The only areas that TSR/WotC swore that they would NEVER develope in any accessory was Sembia. So far they have held true to that statement so dont look forward to any Sembia material other than what is in the FRCS and 2ed box sets. All the FR books are great with the exception Champions of Valor IMO. It just seemed like they had too much munchkin material in it for making PC's but the backstories and histories were good.

Player's Guide to Faerun and a regional book in the area you're DMing/playing in. :)

I will support the Player's Guide to Faerun but I don't think the Faiths & Pantheons book qualifies as a 'must-have' unless you plan on lots of religious characters and plots. The basic info in the FRCS should be ample for most campaigns. Races of Faerun offers some very nice feats and prestige classes for characters of various races and I would probably recommend that as my second pick after the PGtF.

What about monster compendium.

Meh.

Let me put it to you this way: I've been running a Forgotten Realms campaign for the last three and a half years. I've used the Monsters of Faerun book maybe five times. Now, this is either indicative of the fact that I have all the Monster Manuals and use those more frequently, or that the MoF isn't that interesting for the price I paid for it. MoF feels very rushed compared to later 3.0 books.

Monsters of Faerun is pretty decent, but you have to update all the monsters. I probably wouldn't buy it if I didn't already have it.
