A Quick Question

Savage Tide Adventure Path

What's a float? (That which the Blue Nixie was moored on in TINH). I made the assumption that it was 100 feet of open water between the Nixie and the pier, so the characters had to commandeer a rowboat to get to the ship.

Naturally, being terrible with their social skills, they were sitting ducks when Soller’s men began peppering them with crossbow bolts. One was rendered unconscious and the rest, after so many failed climbing checks, manage to board the Nixie and won the encounter, barely.

So again I would like to know what’s a float, for the sake of knowing what I did wrong with the encounter?

A float is a wooden thing that ships are sometimes moored to when they're in a harbor but not moored right to the pier, if I'm not mistaken. It's probably 10' by 10' and made of wood.

Wow, this is a good question I overlooked myself. Thank you for asking it, and thanks cthulhu_waits for the answer, before I made the same mistake.

Yup; that's a little bit of my upbringing as the son of a commercial fisherman showing through, mentioning a float without being a little more clear.

But yeah, basically a float's a chunk of wood or other floating material that's anchored to the sea bed by a chain or rope. A ship can then tie off to the float and won't drift all over the harbor. Think of it as a parking space for boats. that's not attached to land or a pier.
