Nobles / Houses and favor.

Those of you familiar with Eberron setting know that there are certain "DragonMarked" houses.

For those who are not - each major house (think of them as noble bloodlines tied intimately to the history of the world) has a different faction of importance and controls some sort of iconic importance: such as weapons or armor, or transportation etc.

Those of you familiar with DDO (Dungeons & Dragons Online) set in Eberron know that part of the point of playing is to earn favor points for each of these important DragonMarked houses. With enough favor points earned, characters obtain certain "benefits" from the house relative to their houses' cause/primary function.

I was thinking of having the nobles' houses in Cauldron have similar effects in the campaign - and should the PCs do enough to earn their respect they begin to gain certain mechanical or financial bonues from the community and that house.

If there are others who view this as a possible avenue worth exploring for SCAP; perhaps we can put some ideas together for the nobles and their "portfolio" of interests.

i.e. Vanderboren control many of the warehouses; it is then plausible that they also have other real estate avaiable and thus perhaps they are into real estate. Hero groups who impress them with deeds that benefit this house may benefit from the Vanderborens giving the PCs a place house or warehouse at good discounts for the PCs to live or store their things while travelling about.

Another would be the Taskerhills: Mines and workshop of obsidian; what they could bestow for the PCs is worth discussing; as well as the other nobles.

Also I'm adding in another Nobles house: Schmenk. The Schmenk's are all very mine owners. This is for a tie-in to the Age of Worms.

I'm thinking that a young entrepeneur (Balabar) left the city to find his own fortune after hearing of other more valuable mines elsewhere. Since the Taskerhill's are the most wealthy and known to own most of the mines, perhaps the Schmenks are on troubled-times financially due to not being able to keep up with the Taskerhill's thus prompting Balabar to leave.

Just a thought.

Good idea. It sounds a bit like the affiliations you can join presented in the PHB II. But why stop with nobility. You could use other groups, such as the merchants, craftsmen, or even organizations such as the last laugh, Bluecrater Academy, the striders of Fharlang or the Chissel for this purpose as well.

It sounds like a great way to get the party involved in Cauldron, and have some extra roleplaying opportunities.

I agree. The next trick would be a) what can the PCs do to ingratiate themselves to certain organizations (side-treks, etc); and b) what is the reward for earning that favor?
