I was just wondering about the character of Sharlocke from this adventure. He has been obviously advanced with class levels, but when and where did the arcanoloths get updated to 3.5? I know there was an online update, but his features are way more advanced then the online updater was. Can any authors or anyone help me? I'd love to know about their new stats.
Thanks

I believe the original plan was to include a reworked, 3.5 updated arcanaloth alongside Sharlocke who had class levels on top of that baseline. However space limitations precluded featuring the raw 3.5 arcanaloth outside of being there as part of Sharlocke's statblock. It's there, but you have to reverse engineer it.
However I believe that James has stated an intent to include the basic 3.5 arcanaloth in Dungeon at some point, likely during some upcoming "yugolothery"* in the adventure path.
*his word not mine! :)

Todd's right. We revised the arcanaloth for this issue, but didn't have the room to present the "generic" version of the revision alongside of Sharlocke. In hindsight, it would have probably been a better idea to just have Sharlocke be an unadvanced arcanaloth; it would have made the fight with him kind of easy, but meh.
In any event, I believe we're going to have a chance to present the revised arcanaloth's stat block in an upcoming issue before Savage Tide winds up.

That would be awesome! Thanks James! I would love to see all of the yugoloths (Yagnoloth, Mezzoloth, Piscoloth, etc...) that are still 3.0 given a quick update. One question though: the revised arcanoloth is quite powerful, still CR 17 I assume; doesn't that make the base CR 13 ultraloth (the most powerful non-unique yugoloth)weaker by comparison? Thanks again, James.

The base arcanaloth is CR 17, just like the MM2 version was supposed to be. There's not much I can do about the woefully underpowered ultraloth, alas, since he's already 3.5 edition. The best I can do there is to point you at the advanced ultraloth we printed in issue #141; I'd reccomend using him as the baseline ultraloth.

Hey thanks for responding, James! I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't the only one who thought that the Ultraloth was waaaaay too weak for CR 13. I know you can't fix it, just kind of inquiring... On a similar topic, do you feel that the Gelugon (my fav devil) is overpowered for CR 13? He has a huge array of abilities including regeneration, fear aura and a possible AC of 36! Not to mention that he can cone of cold at will and 3/5 of his attacks slow you...
Thanks again...

He's got a really good AC for that level (about 3 more than average for CR 13 monsters), but his hit points are about 40 lower than average. And at that point, fear's a relatively easy thing to deal with, especially if you've a cleric or bard in the party who casts heroes' feast all the time. But his attacks are pretty rough; he's doing damage you'd expect something more CR 15 or 16 would dish out.
He's a tough CR 13, that's for sure. I'd say he'd be better served at CR 14, but then his hit points are way low, and his saves are pretty pathetic. So maybe 13 works after all. The point is, it's not an obvious problem, such as the MM2 arcanaloth has.

Fair enough. Thanks for taking the time to answer me (again). I really appreciate the effort.
