Barrow of the Forgotten King in Faerun

3.5/d20/OGL

I have an obscene number of Forgotten Realms resources so it only makes sense to run my games there. Most of the new adventures from WotC have little sidebars with suggestions on where to place them in the Realms. BotFK doesn't and I was just looking for some advise. Anybody?

Salutations ghettowedge.

I don't have BofTK but I too am a big FR fan and just thought I'd help out a fellow Realms-fan. I guessing BotFK might begin in a wilderness region and I know that the North is the site of several old and fallen kingdoms, so perhaps somewhere in that general region seems plausible. (Sorry I can't give more specifics, but as I don't have the module I know very little about it.)
Hope that helps a little.

The best place to me is in the Unapproachable East regions, as many undead are "unclaimed" and many dungeons/tombs/ect can neatly be tied in using this module.

I'd say Unapproachable East, too, it could work out as a barbarian king's tomb. I remember reading about there being an actual haunted barrow in either Rashemen or Thesk, not sure which.

Ghettowedge, I've been thinking about buying this adventure and would be interested to hear what kind of impression it's made on you.

I bought the adventure last week and I very pleased with my purchase. I have two complaints. First, I wish WoTC would include the source material a non-core monster originates from in their stat blocks, similar to how Dungeon does it. Second, the dungeon complex is very linear, basically one room after another. That said, area is very distinctive and there is a lot of variation when it comes to the types of encounters: combat, environmental hazards, role-playing, traps, puzzles, etc. I also like the usage of non-core material, including monsters (MMIV gets quite a work out in this adventure), base classes, magical items, and legacy items.

You know, it's a decent adventure, but at $20 it's not worth it. I buy Dungeon every month from my FLGS and if it weren't for the new expanded adventure format, I think this would be about the same as one of the adventures from Dungeon.

I began buying adventures again because of Expedition to Castle Ravenloft, which is a must have for DM's IMO. With the wealth of useful encounters and campaign info I had no problem with the $35 price tag.

That led to my purchase of the Shattered Gates of Slaughterguarde, a top notch campaign arc and well worth $20.

Then I bought the Scourge of the Howling Horde. I was dissapointed, but I figured I wasn't the target audience. It's geared to first time DM's and I can accept that for what it is. If I ever run for a group of new players I will use it.

I think for $20 Barrow of the Forgotten King should have been closer to SGoS. Instead it's just a straightforward adventure that only covers 2 levels. There are some interesting encounters and many non-traditional creatures, but I already get that every month in Dungeon. Plus this is a three part campaign arc. That means to collect it all you'll pay $60. That's almost twice the price of Ravenloft. IMO it's not worth it.
