Bridge to Terabithia

Scarab Sages

I hope that in this movie I will be able to feed the fantasy need that I failed to quench with the likes of Narnia or Eragon.

What has everyone heard about this? Has anyone read the books?

OK, I haven't heard of the movie, but I assume it is based on the book of the same name, in which case it will be unlikely to feed that fantasy need you got...

I read a book by this name many, many, many years ago at primary school, and it wasn't really your typical fantasy at all. Not to say it wasn't a good book, but I doubt it would be what you're looking for.

I am seriously pissed off at the way they are marketing this movie. The book was maybe about 10% fantasy, if that, and it was entirely in the imaginary fantasy vein of fantasy at that. There was no magical fairie world, just a couple lonely kids playing pretend out in the woods. Either the trailer is complete horse s&&% or they gutted the book to make it the Lion, the Witch, and the Terabithia.

Yep, thats the book I remember. I haven't heard of the movie or seen any of the marketing, but you'd be right, if they're trying to sell it as a Narnia clone they're either seriously into false advertising or they've changed the story a LOT.

The trailers I've seen make it look literally like the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. There's wall to wall CGI, and a lot of comments about how the movie is about discovering the fantasy world and the creatures therein.

If Hollywood is getting so desparate for fantasy, they should just go option an actual fantasy book, not over emphasize the minor fantasy elements in a non-fantasy book.

Hah! EXACTLY! I had a highly similar conversation to this not too long ago. As soon as I saw the kids swing across into the forest on the vine or whatever, I knew it had to be the book I remembered (albeit vaguely). I was surprised..it's not exactly what I would peg as a feel-good Disney flick. And then...ambulatory trees popped out of hiding, little pixie-ish creatures started hovering about, and I thought, okay, is my memory THAT bad? Or did the people that made this movie just not even read the book? Now, don't get me wrong, I really like fantasy movies, even cheesy, stupid ones (sometimes /especially/ cheesy, stupid ones :) ), but this was, like, a meloncholy coming-of-age story, not an episode of My Little Pony (which I also liked, thankyouverymuch). Unless they're gonna haul out the tired old "it was all just a dream" resolution, I don't know how the producers could ever resolve the cognitive dissonance between the original vision and the finished product.

My memory of the book is a bit vague too, but as I recall it actually dealt with some fairly grim / sad (real life, not fantasy) themes.

It would be a real pity if they did the "it was all a dream" thing.

But I suppose in the book, the wrold they imagined WAS real to those kids ... maybe that's what they're trying to convey? I think they have to be VERY careful going down this path though, it could easily be very very cheesy.

The book WAS a sad nostalgic story that played out like a 'very special' episode of The Wonder Years. They made a short tv version of it yrs ago with Annette OToole (iirc)...which was pretty good and close to the source material. I suppose they could play up the 'fantasy' part of the story to fill it out to feature length. But, they should keep the same sense of loss and naiveté of the characters, and not go the route of the remake of 'Grinch' which totally missed the point and became about crass commercialism instead of expressing the joy of togetherness (or whatever).

Terabethia was how I found out that my definition of fantasy is much more focussed than most peoples'. Someone recommended it to me when I was a kid and I got real excited at finding another good fantasy book. Then I found it at the library, read the back cover and never even bothered to read it.

I'd put money down that the movie will suck, regardless of genre taste.

This was the first book I ever read...

The previews have pretty much convinced me that this is not the same thing. It looks like a cross between Big Fish and The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe.

While I liked both these movies this is not what I recall about the book. Sigh...

Scarab Sages

Mine was The Blind Colt.

I am outraged by this preview.

I read this book several times as a youngster; it was one of my favorites. The story is really about a young boy and girl, and their friendship. One aspect of this friendship is a magical hang out area they have, where they pretend to be King and Queen of a fantasy realm. Even then, the fantasy is fairly tame, and IIRC, they mostly just say what they are pretending.

Ultimately, the story is about loss, friendship, regret, etc. Very little fantasy in it. In fact, I would be surprise to see it grouped as fantasy, as most of the book is not about that. It is merely a means to an end, a plot device.

Then, to see these previews with giant CGI monsters and crap makes me mad. Either the preview is showing a small section, and overselling a minor aspect, or they raped the book and changed it into a full blown fantasy.

Either way I am mad.

I saw BtoT yesterday, and I was surprised. They need to be sued for false advertising, which is a good thing. The movie has very very little to do with finding an imaginary world, but more about finding and losing friends and growing up. It was more like the book than the advertisement ever let on. They used their imagination when they would play together they didn’t go to Narnia. (thank god) It was good. I was happy with it, and it wasn’t to badly corrupted. I wouldn’t recommend it for kids under 10 give or take some. I was in a theater full of 4 to 8 year olds, and let me tell you several were crying their eyes out. It has a pretty heavy message that most younger kids would miss or find a little intense, but I think the movie captured the book as much as a movie ever can.

I agree with you. I thought it was a good flick, I just wasn't in the mood for THAT kinda flick. The ads promised a CG romp which I was in the mood for. Sometimes you want eyecandy. Sometimes you want a well balanced meal.
I wish the advertising wasn't so misleading. Shoulda seen Ghostrider.

so thats ONE of the two movies you saw....

Well Im glad the movie has stayed true to the book, but yeah, sounds like a major case of false advertising.
