Anybody remember the token?

Dungeon Magazine General Discussion

Monster tokens, that is. I just got that new-fangled dungeon map thingie and I love it- does anyone know where I can get the paper(possibly printed out) monster/hero tokens that were in the backs of a few dungeon magazines way back when? Are there PDFs available?

The Exchange

I too miss the tokens. I would love to see them in PDF form.
Any thoughts from the Paizites? Would this be something that could be done? For free? As a bit of a bonus? Because you love us?

I wouldn't know where to get the Dungeon magazine tokens except ebay, but there are others out there on the market in case that helps:

Fiery Dragon make some good tokens in both hard and soft copy:

I couldn't find their downloads here on Paizo, but they're available elsewhere, e.g.

Alas, the tokens won't be coming back. That niche is now pretty much the domain of D&D Minis.

I use Counter Collection Digital 2.0 Gold and TokenTool at RPTools.net. The latter is a drag-n-drop utility that allows you to save PNG token images for print or for use with MapTool; it also allows you to drag-n-drop into MapTool on the fly.

I love tokens and use them routinely.

Actually, I have a Photoshop template and make my own using available art. Thanks to the dungeon downloadable PDFs I can now actually make both flat tokens or stand-up counters (with little re-useable plastic bases) that are uniquely customized for major NPCs using the magazine artwork. Also, there's plenty of left-over artwork for general monsters as well, given time to collect enough of it.

Considering that I am I subscriber and don't sell my tokens or trade the digital files I think that constitutes fair-use, and it's pretty cool besides when you can place a token or image of a specific NPC, villain, what-have-you on the battle-map rather than just the closest-somewhat-representative-mini-in-your-collection.

It's also a much cheaper way to put a horde of monsters into battle than buying minis. A token template, inkjet printer and glue-stick so you can double-thickness the paper (or just use card-stock) gives you a quick and easy way to have major villains send their legions of minions into battle.

Also, flipped tokens are an easier way to represent dead bodies strewn across a battlefield to create difficult terrain and still run the battle rather than toppled minis.

Yes, my 10-12th level PCs do face hordes of 1st-level warrior orcs and skeletons and such as they work their way up to the boss villains, and have recently fought on the front-lines in a major war. Some people only want PCs to face enemies of their level, but it's not realistic, and besides the Players like seeing a single fireball char 44-squares worth of enemies in a single shot, rather than being SR'd and Resisted and Saved and sucked up into large base hit points. It's also a good way to let them burn off a few low-level spells that would be ineffective against powerful opponents, enjoy their Great Cleave feat, and so forth.

Oh ... and yes, the PCs do get minis ;-)
