Flood Season: Shensen and Sarcem

Shackled City Adventure Path

I'm prepping for Flood Season, and two things are bugging me:
1. Shensen Tesseril is a "half drow". Does that mean half-elf with a drow parent, or full elf with a drow parent?
2. What's to stop Jenya from having Sarcem raised? (Other than her own ambitions, of course...) Even if the Church of St. Cuthbert doesn't have a raise dead scroll on hand, Skie has one for sale, or she could even go to the church of Wee Jas.
Thanks for any help!

There could be many reasons for her not bringing him back, perhaps he had previously mentioned to her that when he died he didn't wish to be revived, for his death would mean his work here was done and cuthbert was welcoming him home. Jenya was sort of being groomed to take over for the older more experienced cleric.

Also his wounds caused by the raging tongueeater could be too extensive for a simple raise dead spell. Perhaps it would take a mch higher spell like resurrection and Jenya knows that Sarcem wouldn't want the Church's resources spent on him, not when he died an honorable death.

As for the half drow girl, I've always thought a half drow was half-human half drow. However, in the D&D game Demon Stone, the half-drow is half-wood elf, half drow, so my guess would be that Shensil is half-drow, and half-elf.

Thanks, Jay! That's exactly what I was looking for.

Shensen's half drow, half human.

Fang - I think I remember reading that Sacrem could not be raised because his tongue was removed leaving him not 'whole' and thus not meeting the spell requirements.

Resurrection is an option but not from any of the clerics in Cauldron other than Embril. Jenya would be loath to seek out another churches aid especially the Church of Wee Yas.

An option though could be that she keeps a small portion to have Sacrem resurrected in Sasserine at a later date when she acquires enough funds.

It never came up in my game but if it did I probably would have explained it away by stating that Jenya had spoken with dead and used the Star of Justice to see if Sacrem wished to be returned to the world but he did not. He had felt the mantle needed to be passed to Jenya and that he now knew that his passing needed to occur to awaken her strength and to eventual save Cauldron from evil or something like that...

Thanks, Delvesdeep. I hadn't thought of the loss of his tongue leaving him not whole. That's a good point. I don't even know if it's going to come up, but I have one player (a cleric of St. Cuthbert) whom I anticipate will want to do everything possible to restore Sarcem as high priest.

I had the party burst in just in time to see tongue eater baboon friends finishing off the rest of Sarcem's corpse... just leaving the head (sans tongue).

*evil DM laughter*

Yes...I like that!

re: Sarcem not being Raised: Heck with the tongue... his HEAD has been removed. Read the spell description: body parts missing before casting the spell are missing afterwards. If loss of the body parts would cause immediate death, then the spell just doesn't work. If he had just had his tongue removed, he could be raised, though.

So the question becomes, why doesn't she have him Resurrected? Answer: Money, lack thereof.

ALSO: Without Sarcem in charge, Jenya becomes the leader of the Cauldron shrine of St. Cuthbert, which is an important story bit. She's basically the main NPC ally of the campaign, and having her level up alongside the PCs (althgouh a few levels behind) is a great way to give Cauldron a living, dynamic feel. More to the point, removing higher level cleric allies from the scene is important because it gives the spotlight to the PCs and encourages them to rely more on themselves and to view the NPCs less as characters to save their bacon when things go bad, but as people to protect once things start getting crazy near the campaign's end.

In my campaign, one of the players is a cleric of St. Cuthbert and I introduced Sarcem directly, very early on. Part of Sarcem's back story was that his wife died several years prior to the start of the campaign. It was well known in the church that Sarcem very much looked forward to being re-united with his wife and would not want to be raised, resurrected, or in any way brought back to life.

Jeffrey--I did see this, and I liked it a lot--thanks for reminding me about your background for Sarcem. I had forgotten the fact that he missed his wife so much. I used some of your ideas to help populate the church and give the cleric player some background on the people he knows. He is currently pursuing a romantic relationship with Morina Drakesblood, whom he feels a kinship with, as he is also wyrm blooded.
