Auric the Free City Champion?

Age of Worms Adventure Path

I was just wondering how Auric could be the Free City of Greyhawk champion for the last two years when he starts out the adventure path at only level 5. Surely a bustling metropolis of over 60 000 could produce a tougher champion than this?

Any thoughts?

Well, he does lead a winning team of golems...

Mostly, though, he's level 5 so that if the PCs decide to try something with him, they won't get their asses completely handed to them in the first adventure. And after all, the DM is the only one who would know the NPCs level - play him up enough that the PCs don't even try to mess with him, and he might as well be 12th level.

TK

There was another thread about this with a few suggestions.

One of them was that Auric was merely a part of a team that won, not necessarily the leader. Also, there was a thought that perhaps this new incarnation of the Champion Games has only been going for a few years and so the level of competition was pretty low to start with. This year the Games have finally achieved widespread popularity coinciding with the entry of many higher level contestants.

I think I'll go for some blend of these suggestions alongside TK's excellent point that no one but the DM knows what level Auric and company might be.

Thanks guys; those are some good suggestions. My players were postulating how powerful he would have to be to be the champion in a place like Greyhawk. . . But they don't have to know

Shadow Lodge

I decided to make him 12th level right from the get go along with Khellek and Tirra (Even though in module 5 their 10th). I figured that as long as I played it right, the fact of him being 12th level would make little to no difference - and it would make a hell of a lot more sense why he was wearing that belt. I figured that while Khellek would kill the PCs without too many qualms, Auric was a different kettle of fish.

Auric's not a cold blooded murderer and so if the PCs decided for some reason to go against him, he'd have fun knocking out the first PC to come at him, then tell the rest to go get him an audience. I figured a very quick example that they were outmatched (three attacks in a round) would be enough to get the PCs to back down from hostilities. Auric would also stop Khellek from doing anything that would get his group into too much legal trouble.

As it turned out, my PCs never went near the trio aside from a sneaky rendevous with Tirra. I suppose it's best to underline that while an enemy can be powerful enough to kill who they want, it certainly doesn't mean that they're going to turn around and do it. Auric in particular would not want such a stain on his name.

I think it perfectly fine to up Auric's power level so it makes sense without endangering the PCs too much.
