Hey Guys:
I found an interesting text based D&D Campaign getting set up elsewhere on these boards. Something I've been hoping to see more of. The game is set in Mystara. I thought I'd let you all know about it. I think it'd be fun to be in a game with you all.
You needn't know overmuch about the setting, since there's a fairly nice character generator with a good setting primer.
I'd be interested in seeing what you come up with.

I've looked at the thing and I'm somewhat confused about the operation... the DM will make posts about the environment, and then there will be a pool of characters to choose from, and any reader can choose one and just post what they do, so long as it's in the character's personality type and background? And it goes from there?

I tried the first link : it's not complete at all... (you can't go further than choosing country of origin and race).
Sorry : my name was not mentionned !!

Yeah, there's TONS of people on here I'd love to invite. Too bad I couldn't RSVP more. I don't know that there's many people on Paizo I wouldn't love to game with sometime!
Man, I wonder what the guys here do to attract such a cream of the crop crew of gamers. Anyhow appologies I didn't know you well enough to include you.

Naw. It's a pretty straight roleplaying game. The DM writes up the posts in blog form and the players respond with their character's actions in the comments, then the DM writes it all up in the next entry. Just one character per player I believe.

Yeah, I noticed its a bit spotty in areas. Mostly its a crash course in the setting. All that's required to submit a character is to read the background info and do a writeup for a first level character. The generator, I gather, is pretty much to get people up to speed on Mystara's regions, and what races are available where. I think it's just to get character submissions that are nicely tied into the canon of the setting. I wouldn't sweat it overmuch--I'm sure he'll work with you if there was stuff you didn't know because he didn't have it posted yet.

Maybe it's because they put out such awesome magazines that anyone with any sense that cares about D&D comes to Paizo.com!
(I'll be expecting the check for that ringing endorsement within the next few days. There's still one cookie that I was promised that I never got, as well. I trust it was a shipping error).
Do you have a character on this thing yet, Grim?
| Grimcleaver |
Sure do! He's buried in the comments on the Characters page. His name is Feldard Scarredbrow--a Dwarven fighter from Rockhome.
I posted your question to him also Saern. On re-reading the "how to play" section it did seem a little ambiguous.
I really hope its a straight up roleplaying game and not some kind of collaborative story thing. I really do. Anyway the question is up there and I'll copy it here when I get a reply.

Naw, it's not my game. There was just an ad for it down in campaign journals and well, I really liked what I saw and thought I'd toss around a few invites. Far from the Grimcleaver system this one isn't even 3.5 (nor 3.0 nor even 2.0). In fact it runs out of the old Rules Cyclopedia. How cool is that?
On the other hand I could be convinced to possibly run a game of my own at some point were there enough demand out there for ten hit point wizards.

More info from the DM on Saern's question:

It turns out it will be a collaborative story. I'm a little grumbly about it, but the DM seems cool so I'll give it a shot. I have promised not to hijack other PC's characters however, unless they specifically ask me to play them or make them public domain because of a vacation or whatever--I just think people play their own characters best.

I'd play in a game run by the Great Grim! Of course I might decide to run my own play-by-post game sometime in the future with my own funky house rules.

Hello G
This has been by far the most engaging game I have ever played and at 5 years certainly the longest. I thought the initial premise of character use was clever, but ultimately unworkable as people invest alot of themselves in their characters.
What really works IMO is the narrative technique. The action is descibed in posts as if you are reading a book (third person) certain assumptions are made by the characters in order to make the narative flow so strict adherance to the rules is secondary.
Experience is awarded skill use/story progression basis as pbm is by its natue a slow medium. But this has its advantages as well, the narative allows for character developement. The use of a simple system like OD&D helps stop the enevitable rule abuse by players (me included). The beauty of the game is that it is readable and engaging even if you aren't playing.
I hope more of this style of this style of gaming is out there....
