That's right.

I don't know if it is reported elsehwere, but the first Dragonlance Book, Dragons of Autumn Twilight, is being filmed as an animated movie to be distributed my Paramount. Voices include Kiefer Sutherland, Phil Lamarr, Michale Rosenbaum, James Mardsden and Lucy Lawless.

Thoughts?

Well, for a cartoon it will probably turn out fine. Who doesn't love riding dragons? A young audience is usually happy with whatever they're fed. I was when I was a kid. Anything sword and sorcery themed was allllllllll good.

I was always surprised Pern never got made into a real movie. Especially after Dragonheart proved that movie dragons were capable of exhibiting personality.

Yet, as always, I feel that most genre writing could really stand to hire writers who understand the gravitas involved in good scene work, with character arcs that aren't obtusely cookie cutter. I know fantasy is the bastion of the brilliant young mind but some of us grow up still loving it, and expecting it to evolve with us in both maturity and sophistication. Peter Jackson didn't underestimate his audience's expectations. I wish so many others would follow suit. As important as the glamour CGI provides can be, it alone is no substitute for well presented pathos and vulnerability.

I want nothing more than to start enjoying these D&D movies, but I find them awkward and amateurish. It's like they hired the writers from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

Q.F.T. (!)

I saw the art company's work that was contracted to do this. Dreadful goshawful stuff. The closest thing that came to mind was the drawing style for the old Smurfs cartoon.

I was really hoping for something good to come of this, but....
