Slaying Graz'zt

3.5/d20/OGL

We're playing a heavy modified SCAP and will be using no other than Graz'zt himself as the BBEG. Right now I'm looking for suggestions on the final adventure in which the characters travel to Azzagrat and confront him (at about 20th level).

Have you got any ideas how to make this adventure memorable?? Cool characters, plot hooks, means of defense or magic items?

Thanks!

Well, if you haven't got it already, get Fiendish Codex 1: Hordes of the Abyss. Details Graz'zt's stats, his realm, some of his kids, his cult. Great resource by some very distinguished authors.

One of the things about Graz'zt is that he's a master strategist. He's held the largest territory of any demon prince from both Orcus and Demogorgon for a long time. So a bunch of meddling 20th level PCs are going to have to plan an assault on his layer very thoroughly and bring a great deal of resources to bear in confronting him. His horde of illegitimate children could be a great way to throw some challenges, roleplaying and intrigue at the characters. Graz'zt expects his kids to scheme against him and Prime Material Plane invaders like the PCs provide all kinds of opportunities to advance in their "beloved" father's eyes by rubbing out the threat posed by the PCs or working covertly with the invaders to get daddy out of the way.

If you can find the Second Edition module "For Duty and Deity" or something similar, Graz'zt is the major antagonist in that as well, and could provide some ideas on the perils of planar journeying. But ultimately, Hordes of the Abyss is the best place to start.

Yes, I have that already which probably led to my decision to use this guy. It's such a great book!

Thanks, I might well include one of Graz'zt children. Maybe the adventure could start with an assassination attempt by Graz'zt' daughter Thraxxia on the material plane. Later on in Zelatar, Azuth could try to lure the characters into helping him overthrow his father. Still not sure though. Hm...

I also think that I should improve Graz'zt powers to make him a harder fight. Maybe raising him to a CR of 26 or so.

A more powerful writeup for Graz'zt appeared in the Book of Vile Darkness; I believe it has his CR at around a 29, but as Fiendish Codex itself pointed out, the 3.0 challenge ratings were often overshot, especially at higher levels (one of the back tables of the book, listing the CRs of demons, has a number of baddies written up in MMII and Fiend Folio, among them the Klurichir and Myrmyxicus, at CRs 6-7 points lower than their original writing). Because of this, I would recommend running Graz'zt as he appears in Book of VD, and assume him to be at the CR level you desire, or perhaps 1-2 points lower (24-25). Just a thought.

Your post reminded me of a Lobo comic from a few years back, where an army of his illegitemate offspring banded together to take him down.

I don't really know much about her besides that she wrote the demonomicon stuff and was responsible for some mayhem at the TOEE. It seems like a great idea though. Were can I find more information about her?

There was a scant bit about her in the fiendish codex.

I don't know if she's ever been statted up anywhere before.

Here's the URL for the module "For Duty and Deity".

It is in pdf format and a Forgotten Realms adventure.

Heck, I may pick it up myself. Has anyone used it? What's the verdict?

Cheers

I've got it, but never had high enough level PCs in Second Edition to use it. It's a decent read, but the crux of the adventure lies mostly in just traveling through the Abyss and trying to figure out where Graz'zt has most likely stowed Waukeen. I think it's great because it stresses a subtle approach a bit more than going in spells and swords ablaze.

It's a free download at Wizards

Thanks to everyone who pointed me in the direction of "For duty and deity"!!! It's just what I needed.

Has anyone of you actually played it?
