Last night my party had their first true close call of the Savage Tide adventure path. In Parot Island in the big room with the sagging roof and the 5 Monstrous Crabs. Their were 3 zombies in the room, and as the party was fighting the zombies, the crabs swarmed them. The parties Warblabe got hit by two zombies in the same round one of which was a critical. He took enough damage to put him at -7 hp, surrounded by Zombies. The parties Druid stepped up to try to help him (the Druid is the groups second best melee fighter with his Viper animal companion). The Viper animal companion was killed in one round and the Druid dropped to 4 hp. The Spellthief gave the Warblade a potion to return him to consciousness, and he was promptly knocked back to negative hp on the next round. He was given to Cure Light Wounds with the Druid's and Archivists spontaneous healing ability and he was restored to consciousness but fought the zombies from the ground taking penalties to hit because he didn't want to waste an action to get on his feet while surrounded. The the spellthief managed to kill 3 of the crabs, but was also down to 3 hp. They finally managed to pull the fight out, but both divine casters were completely out of spells, the Warblade was at 6 hp after being in negatives twice, and the Spellthief was down to 3 hp. The party barricaded themselves in the room where they entered and spent a nervwracking night watching for more zombies and waiting for the divine casters to rest to heal the group. One of the better encounters I have had in a while.
The Heucuva cleric was a bit of a let down in that he only hit once and the warblade easily saved against his blight. His spells didn't really help him much in that regard, and even buffed with an AC of 20 thanks to Shield of Faith, he was rather anticlimactic as the "toughest" creature in the smuggler's caves. The party managed to get out of the caves without using the Elemental Gem, so now they have a heavy "hitter" emergency item they can use. I really need to try to convince them to invest some gold in a wand of curing or something since they don't have a true cleric. That would let the divine casters use their spells for something other than spontaneous healing.
Great session last night though. This adventure really is awesome. Thanks James Jacobs for giving my group an amazing beginning to this adventure path. I couldn't ask for it to be any better.

I have to agree with you about close calls. my group that consists of Tiefling Swashbuckler, Elven Druid (with his trusty eagle), an Elven Beguiler and Human Fighter (Ultimate Archer) barely made it through the first part of this last adventure. the rhagodessas nearly killed the swashbuckler in one hit, and the druid. the iron corba scored a crit on its bite and cause maxed str damage to the beguiler who failed her save. And the only healer in the entire party has only 2 healing spells :X. I think everyone in the group got knocked to at least with in a 1 point of death multiple times....Except for that darn archer...next stop parrot island and the lotus dragon hideout
