I do not believe there has been an Ecology of the Slaad (at least not under 3rd edition). However, I do have this to add (I found this on the WotC boards a long time ago, and I don't have the original poster's nick):
Of all the creatures that the Surians have encountered since the Gating, few have been as intriguing as the Slaad, for the simple reason that while it's clear enough what modivates the Celestials, nobody knows what drives the Slaad.
That is, it's quite clear what motivates them: whatever they feel like at the moment. Some say the Slaad are the most dangerous creatures to come across. But that's just because, while a fiend will try to kill you immediatly, a Modron will try to kill you if you break one of their byzantine laws, and a Celestial will try to kill you only if there, a Slaad will kill you when the mood strikes.
Put another way: if you stay with a Slaad long enough, they will try to kill you for whatever reason. Food, curiosity, some percived slight by your clothing. Whatever.
Of course, a uncontrolable race like the Slaad would never consent to having rulers. And so, they don't. That is, they do. The Slaad Lords, which engage in various lord tasks. As powerful beings indeed, some suspect that if they worship the Slaad Lords, the Slaad Lords will provide them spells. This is completly true. Except that the Slaad Lords don't know how to provide spells, and hate to be worshiped. What time is it?
