I'll be moving to the Utica area in two days and am hoping to find a new group to hook up with. I'll be in Clinton for about a year, it looks like.
I'm willing to join an existing group, or form a new one, and would be happy to DM one of the APs for a group on an every other weekend basis. I could drive as far afield as Syracuse, though that might get dodgy in the winter snow.
Savage Tide or Age of Worms, anyone?

Vinnie--sorry, I either didn't get it or accidently deleted it. (I sometimes weed out the spam a little too quickly and pull up some flowers in the process.) I'll try e-mailing you, and make sure your address isn't targeted by the spam filter. Jake

Another Rochester gamer here, BUT...
There used to be a gaming club located at 869 Broad Street in Utica (an old warehouse type place), although their Meetup.com page is gone (which could be because Meetup.com charges now). Apparently it was an old store (Arcane Sanctuary) and some people kept up the lease.
Never actually met anyone there, I just went looking for Arcane Sanctuary (which is how I know the address, since it's still on some game store lists).
If that doesn't work out, at least you know there used to be gamers in Utica...
There's a Syracuse gaming store that might be able to point you in the right direction -- Altered States.
It's now called 'How You Play The Game'. http://www.howyouplaythegame.com/locations.php
They have moved from their old location and all their events are cancelled for the rest of the month, hopefully that isn't a bad sign.

Many apologies that this hasn't worked.

Upstate NY has a mysterious dearth of RPers. I'm a little too far away (in Rochester) or I'd help you out.
I travel a lot in NY and PA, and I've lived in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and Oswego, and I've never had a problem finding a game group.
Actually, in Syracuse/ Auburn/ Watertown/ Oswego/ Ithaca area there are quite a few RPers now. Not just 4E, but Marvel Super Heroes, White Wolf, 3.5, and more. (Over the last few years, I've played with groups doing DC heroes, Victoriana, Heavy Gear, V&V, and even Ironclaw).
I don't know how much role playing is supported by the store that used to be Altered States (changed its name, location, and gaming trends a few times), but there are still lots of other game stores that support the hobby, and lots of generic groups (D&D Meetup, CNY RPG yahoo group) that have organised monthly get-togethers and, of course a bunch of smaller, semi-private groups of gamers.
I know that SUNY-Oswego has a very active group, and a college-sponsored Student Association that is open to non-students, as well as an annual convention.
As for gamers, they crawl out of the woodwork whenever you run something. I did a D&D game at a hobby shop a few years back, letting anyone who wnated to play join up. For three weeks we had 16!!! players. For the rest of the 2 year campaign, the group was actually 9 regular players, but that's not usnusual.
Normally, if you give some advanced notice, you can easily get at least 6 players for any given game system. (Last week, at the FLGS in Auburn, they hosted the WOTC DMG2 release party. There were 16 players, 3 GMs and a handful of watchers.)
Buffalo has an active group of gamers at the Jester's Cap in Lancaster (I've stopped in there a few times while in Buffalo for work and there's always people there. Some of my old group from 20 years ago still play there...)
And Albany is having a Game Day at Zombie Planet next weekend.
In other words, I think that Upstate NY has a VERY active RPG society, you just gotta get out there and let them know you're available.
