Help with finding name of artwork on cover of old dragon magazine.

Dragon Magazine General Discussion

Hi Everyone. I am wondering if anybody remembers a cover of dragon magazine that has an old solamnic knight pointing a sword at you with three young knights in the background and a red dragon? The dragon definitely has the style of Todd Lockwood, but after going to his site I was unable to find the artwork. I have always assumed that this picture was about the dragonlance warrior series that dealt with Sir Pirvan, though it does not show up on the book covers. I believe the issue was released around 1997-1999? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi. I feel silly, but I was able to find the name of the print. It is by Todd Lockwood called the Wayward Knights. It was a book cover that's the way I found it.

Scarab Sages

I think you may be talking about one of the Annuals from the late 1990s. I remember a cover with a figure in the foreground, who had a shock of spiky white hair, and a droopy moustasche, flanked by several companions.
The main figure did look like an older version of Sturm Brightblade, had he lived to a ripe old age.
It may very well have been used as a book cover; a Paizo staffer on another thread confirmed that freelance artists, even back in the earliest days of TSR, would often retain the rights to their work, to be reprinted elsewhere.
