Dungeon #132: Wild Watcher adaptations?

Dungeon Magazine General Discussion

Ok, this cool fey in Dungeon #132, the Wild Watcher, seems like a very interesting, flavorful, and neat sort of "Fey Champion of the Natural World" sort of thing.

But it's adapted to the Age of Worms adventure path, so exactly how does one, or how would one, adapt it to Forgotten Realms or Eberron?

I run Forgotten Realms and am trying to figure out what role the Wild Watcher would have in that world? I did decide to strike out the druids-turned-mighty-fey background and have it where they're naturally fey. Anyone have ideas or suggestions?

In the context of the Age of Worms campaign, the adaptation notes suggest making the Order of the Storm an ancient forgotten sect of druids faithful to Silvanus in FR. For Eberron they tie the Order of the Storm to the dwarves of the Ironroot mountains that defended against the armies of Kyuss thousands of years ago.

There are other Eberron possibilities for these creatures if you aren't trying to place them in the context of the Age of Worms campaign. If they aren't transformed druids then they could be fey who created demiplanes as safe havens during the Age of Demons. The dragons learned of this during their war with the fiends of that age. Gatekeeper students of the dragons could journey to these areas to find allies, knowledge or hidden items of the past.

Another alternative is to use these powerful fey to protect against invasions into the planes of Thelanis or Lammania. This is one unexplored aspect of Eberron. With so many manifest zones and the potential for planar incursions into Eberron, shouldn't the planes have guardians in case the forces of Eberron ever decided to launch their own invasion? Wild Watchers would make an excellent deterrant. Perhaps during the Last War Aundair sent forces into the Eldeen Reaches and accidentally invaded an extraplanar area. Retreating soldiers might have stories to tell of a powerful being wiedling 4 elemental standards who decimated their unit.

For the Forgotten Realms the Wild Watcher could be the Chief Fey Guardian at the nexus of all Fey Crossroads and Backroads (Magic of Faerun). Should anyone seriously threaten to abuse or even destroy these pathways they would have to face the Wild Watcher.

Rather than their original entry, I changed it to match a more generic campaign. Instead of the whole "ancient druid sect that used a ritual to transform into uber-powerful fey guardians" I rewrote it like so:

"Wild watchers are the natural world's fey champions, incarnations of nature's desire to protect itself from the most vile of catastrophes. They are rare guardians of both the fey and their realms, developed into existence ever so slowly through the centuries by the will of nature itself or through legendary fey magic."
