Tomb-tainted Soul Feat and Aow

Age of Worms Adventure Path

Liberty's Edge

I saw in an earlier thread that one of the groups had a character with TTS. My group has just started and one of my players has taken TTS for his character also.

Is this going to be a problem? A LOT of the things that Kyuss and his minions do are negative energy-related attacks.

TTS specifically refers to Healing and Harming spells, but does that carry over into other spells with Positive or negative energy elements? What about energy drain, or enervation, or finger of death? What about ressurection or restoration for that matter?

If anyone else out there has some insight into this matter, let me know. I want to lay out the groundrules with my player before the game gets too far along.

I don't have my rulebooks on hand at the moment, but I believe that, by the wording, the only effects of Tomb Tainted Soul are:

1) Spells with the healing descriptor and others that restore hit point loss instead damage the character.

2) The inflict line of spells heals the character.

All other effects should be as normal, unless you as the DM rule otherwise. Resurrection I know works normally (that's how James Jacob's character Tyralandi began life - through raise dead, actually.

Energy drain and enervation I think are covered under another feat which has Tomb Tainted Soul as a prerequisite.

Finger of death also may or may not be covered under a later feat.

As restoration works on undead (since their mental scores can be damaged normally), it will work on a character with Tomb Tainted Soul as well.

Hope this helps,

My character in the office Age of Worms campaign has this feat; I picked it well in advance of any of the adventures coming in, and I must admit I cackled with glee each time some new negative-energy damage effect showed up.

That said... I don't think it's unbalancing at all. Remember, healing magic can hurt you if you take this feat, which makes it very difficult to get healing since it's more than likely that your party clerics can't spontaneously cast inflict spells. They'll need to prepare them, which means that they won't have as many. You'll need to spend gold on inflict wound wands, and hopefully there's some inflict wounds potions handy if you go into negative hit points so your friends who can't use wands can save you.

It's a good feat. It's not game-breaking, though, and it certainly gives the character some neat tactical advantages in some of the encounters. But so do a lot of other powers and feats and abilities.

Thanks to both of you for the advice. I feel much better about the matter.
