If the PCs fail to kill Dragotha, according to the prophecies in Spire of Long Shadows, the age of worms should never happen. the next last prophecy being "a tripartite spirit again becomes one, and at its advice are the mighty undone," the tripartite spirit being Balakarde, and "the mighty" being (I assume) Dragotha. Thus the age of worms cannot begin until Dragotha's destruction, and even then only if Balakarde helps. Right?
"A tripartite spirit" could also be thought of as the Ebon Triad or something similar and "the mighty" could refer to anyone. Prophesies are hard to pin down, which is part of the point. And if it were to be the Ebon Triad gods coming together, the prophecy itself is based on a farce that had been perpetuated for hundreds of years. Regardless, the approaching Age of Worms is something enacted by a group of beings with some degree of free will, so if it just doesn't work because some stupid prophecy isn't fulfilled, that's silly.
"A tripartite spirit" coming together could refer to Lashonna, Dragotha and Kyuss joining together in a common aim, with the "mighty" being Alhaster and just about any high level characters that would try to get in their way.
Those prophet types are slippery.

Exactly. The intended target of the prophecy is certainly the unification of Balakarde, but if that doesn't happen it could just as easilly refer to the Ebon Aspect or even something that happens off stage from the main adventrue. In other words, if the PCs make it through "Wormcrawl" without unifying Balakarde, "Dawn of a New Age" can still happen. If the PCs succeed in stopping the Age of Worms anyway, maybe they did so BECAUSE they didn't unify Balakarde's spirits?
