I'm looking for some advice on side quests for my party. I'd like to do an adventure for each of them, that plays toward their strengths / character background.
Background: I've started DMing AOW for my D&D group. It's my first time in the DM chair in a couple years. We just completed the Shackled City Adventure Path, under a different DM, who is one of my players. The players all know that this is an adventure path.
The setting:
Eberron. Diamond Lake is in central Breland, and Sharn is The Free City.
The characters:
Oz: Shifter Urban Ranger. It looks like Oz will be going into Justicar/Bloodhound/Master Inquisitive. Think Casablanca.
Max: Human Artificer. It looks like Max will stick with Artificer, maybe with a bit of Dragonmark Heir.
Suspiria: Human Fighter. Suspiria will stay in a marshall role, probably with some Barbarian. She might take some Extreme Explorer.
Torin: Human Cleric/Paladin. It looks like Torin will go into Silver Flame Exorcist.
Rock: Gnome Cloistered Cleric. Rock is a struggling journalist. His parents made their names with war reporting, and he hopes to make his mark too. Think All the President's Men. Rock's player has taken a sabatical for real-life reasons, but he might return.
I would like to use published adventures, if I can. I'm not too good with writing coherent adventures myself <grin />
My current ideas:
Suspiria: Hellspike Prison (Fantastic Location). Suspiria's player enjoys writing up the stats for her character's family, even with the knowledge that they might never actually get used. So, Suspiria's parents are a Sentinal Marshall of Deneith (father) and a Thunderguide (mother). My thought is to have her parents captured by the Devil Visciannix. Visciannix would have the plan that he would trade the father for the segment. The mother would be presented as a "token of good faith" or something. The fallback plan would be to have his minions at Hellspike prison, where the father would be held, kill the PCs when they attempt a rescue and get the rod that way. The thing is that the PCs will be toward the upper end of the difficulty scale for Hellspike Prison. Perhaps, if they are of high-enough level, I'll even have Visciannix himself in the prison for the climactic encounter...
Oz: Because Oz is definately going for a hardboiled, noirish detective, I'd like to run an adventure that focused on that. To that end, I'm planning to run Murder in Oakbridge, Shut-in, or Chimes at Midnight. I'm really leaning towards Chimes at Midnight. Having read through it, I really like the feel. I'll probably do his before going into Hall of Harsh Reflections.
Torin: I'm really unsure what to do with Torin. Torin's player has said that he would like to take Leadership, and employ his character's sister through the feat. She would be a Cleric of the Silver Flame. I would like to do something with that, but I'm not sure what.
Max: I'm unsure what to do with Max. Max is a member of House Cannith. He somehow survived the Day of Mourning (though he lost his family and possessions). He's taken two flaws (non-combatant and something else) to pay for Sacred Vow/Vow of Nonviolence. His plan (which I've okayed) is to at some point realize that sometimes, violence is necessary and some people just have to die.... At which point, he'll drop the flaws and Sacred Vow/Vow of Nonviolence. I think that I would like to work that into his side quest.
Rock: In the event Rock's player returns, I'm thinking of running And Madness Followed, using the hook that Rock is hired to write a story on the playwright. I'd like whatever adventure I use to be focus on the reporter aspect, not just as a hook.
