A question about doppelgangers

Dungeon Magazine General Discussion

When doppelgangers change shape, can they imitate equipment, clothing, etc.?

It seems to me that they're kind of limited if they have to beat up a party member and steal his clothes and equipment in order to replace him, since their supposed to be able to read someone's mind and quickly imitate the form of another person whose presence or arrival is expected. On the other hand, it also seems a bit unfair to let them create any piece of working equipment out of their own flesh.

I think--think mind you, that their powers are much like the Change Self spell. They can tailor their appearance fully, including clothes. I don't think they get fleshy weapons. They might be able to have a sheathed weapon on their hip, but it would be just for show. Again I don't know if it's actually their flesh shifting into the new form or if it's an illusion that covers over their withered bodies. I like the illusion idea better, but doppelgangers aren't a particular area of expertise for me so I'm really sailing without a compass here.

The MM doesn't say they do, so I would assume not. It says, "They are cunning and patient, willing to wait until an opportunity presents itself instead of attacking rashly." This gives the impression that they would take the clothing of their victims. Think polyjuice potion from Harry Potter.

Of course, if you're the DM, you can make the power include clothing if you want.
