question on catfolk

Hey guys! quick question...if I wanted to remove the +1 la from catfolk, how would you recommend going about it? currently they have:

+4 Dex, +2 Cha
speed 40 ft
low-light vision
+2 on listen and move silently
+1 natural armor

now, if I took the dex bonus from +4 to +2, would that be enough? or maybe take the dex bonus down and remove the nat armor? what about adding a minus to a different physical stat instead? any feedback would be helpful. thanks!

I might add a -2 to Str, take away their natural armor. YMMV.

All of the standard races have a +2 bonus to one ability score, -2 to another, and a few minor abilities to anchor the race's place in the world. The penalty score is always at least as valuable as the "bonus" score unless you suffer another penalty; dwarves' penalty is to Charisma, the weakest score, but they have a speed penalty. So you can do it a few ways.

  • Make them an attractive race of sorcerers and bards - and sometimes thieves. +2 Cha, -2 to Str, low-light vision, +2 on listen and move silently, 30ft speed, and +1 natural armour. (You can get away with keeping the +1 natural armor here; it doesn't stack with magic later on, it's only one third as good as +2 to Dex would have been, and the Strength penalty discourages heavy-armour characters from taking advantage of it.)

  • Make them a race of wild, fickle people, who have a reputation in the land of men for being sneaky. +2 Dex, -2 Wis, low-light vision, drop to 30ft speed, +2 listen and move silently, +1 to all Dexterity related skills, and no natural armour.

You might call the weaker catfolk race "half-catfolk", make them more humanlike and less nature-based.

  • Hey Jon, what magic negates a natural armor bonus? I couldn't find any, but I'm getting that sickly feeling I always get when I'm afraid I overlooked aomething.

    A touch attack? :-P

    Negates? In what way?

If you mean literally removes it, I think there's a spell in Complete Book of Eldritch Might which removes someone's natural armour, and I allow bestow curse to inflict a lesser version of the same.

Otherwise, an amulet of natural armour doesn't stack with it... I think. That is to say I'd rather it didn't, since it makes LA +0 races with +1 natural armour possible without munchkins using it to get a free +1 to AC at high levels.

As in the previous post, yes, touch attacks ignore natural armour. This is why I say +1 natural armour is weaker than +2 Dex; the Dex would give you +1 to AC and touch AC except when flat-footed, +1 to Reflex saves, +1 to ranged weapons and ranged touch spells, and +1 to a plethora of useful skills. In comparison, halflings get +1 Size to AC, melee attacks and ranged attacks at the cost of 20ft base speed, and they get a lot of extra stuff to compensate for the speed loss.

Should have been a little clearer... my bad. I was refering to what you said on higher levels and nat armor not stacking with something. You may want to double check on that amulet. I'm fairly certain it stacks with existing natural armor (it's a favorite of shape changing druids in my campaigns).
