What sort of action should it be to use the feat to shorten the grip or to go back to reach?
I am thinking of a swift action or a move action depending on what the player wants to do.
Swift so it can only be done on the players turn, and only once, and a move action if they want to spend the extra time.
So a player could start with having reach, then at the beginning of thier turn use a swift action to shorten thier grip, attack with a standard action, and then use the move action to lengthen thier grip again.
Any thoughts?

So, essentially they could change grip twice per round. Usually options like this can only be chosen once per round, as a free action (see Dodge). They can do this any time in the round (during their turn), which affords them all the flexibility they need.
I might allow a character to switch grip twice a round, but they'd need to make some sort of a check or lose their grip (as they're tossing it back and forth all the time).

Now I don't know what the author thought when he created the feat but since action isn't mentioned I think its not meant to require an action at all. The feat just allows you to strike an opponent at a shorter distance. If you want more realism an action could be used, but for simplicity I would just say that the feat ads a bonus without any further cost than sacrificing a feat slot.

Come to think of it, that's not a bad idea.
goliath or half giant swashbuckler with a giant sized spiked chain.
15 ft reach, a decent dex, good strength for one and a half damage, and wp finesse for free!
that first mage type that ray of enfeeblement'd your butt would be in for a rude surprise when your attack bonus doesn't fall through the floor!
