Profession Skill article

Dragon Magazine General Discussion

It'd be interesting to see an article based on the Profession skill. Like a detailed system of different professions, similiar to how Profession (sailor) was done in "Stormwrack", Profession (mining) done in "Races of the Dragon" and Profession (siege engineer).

I am not saying all skills like Profession (cobbler) or any of that sort, but common professions or ones that would need some detail to flesh out.

One in particular, the Profession (gambling) skill. If not, I just wish there was some article to come in the future on a simplistic set of rules and tools for gambling on a nightly, weekly, monthly, or career basis. Not running your own festhall or casino or whatever, you can use the "Running a Business" section Dungeon Master's Guide 2 for that, but for adventurers on the go who make gambling a habit.

And I don't mean specific encounters and you actually play cards, 3 dragon ante, or roll dice. Just a general evening's worth of gambling or something. That'd be a neat article to see and useful as well.

*sigh*

*deletes his half-written proposal for an article on cobblers*

Thanks for this idea. Would there be any interest in a Profession (cooking) article?

I'm thinking same sort of thing as Perform; based on your DC check able to make better or worse meals, etc.

Actually, a Profession (cooking) chart would be great! I have a player who plays a strongheart halfling Evoker/Cleric/Mystic Theurge that maxes his skill ranks in Profession (cook). The character considers cooking as much an art as magic and not only parallels the two philosophically, but also physically sometimes and plans to craft magic food and such. "Curry of Life, anyone? Have your fallen comrade drink one cup of this and the food is so good it'll knock the spirit back into him!" *LOL*

Of course, using the DMG II "Running a Business" section he is also planning to open his chain of restaurants in Faerun using the profession skill.

You asked for it:

Cook DC: Result
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------
10 Poor Meals: Cooking meals like these is quite simple. You can sell your meals for as much as 1d10cp.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------
15 Common Meals: These meals can be sold for as much as 1d10sp.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------
20 Good Meals: These meals can be sold for as much as 1d6gp.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------
25 Excellent Meals: These meals can be sold for as much as 2d6gp.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------
30 Extraordinary Meals: Meals such as these are fit for royalty (and those who are skilled enough to be able to craft such masterpieces should expect employment from such if they can reproduce these meals day in, day out). They are worth 2d10gp each.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------

In my game I give a circumstance bonus (+3) for using fresh or fine ingredients.

Does anyone have any suggestions regarding this? I feel that the amount of money for each DC requires adjustment.

How about a synergy bonus for Profession (cook) would be you gain a +2 bonus to Profession (cook) if you have 5 or more ranks in Craft (alchemy)? The two are synonomous in the aspect of mixing the right ingredients and a sort of "chemistry", and some alchemical ingredients in a fantasy campaign would make great cooking ingredients.

Actually an article making the Profession skill interesting at all would be nice.

If my players are an example, people simply don't use them.

I have had Profession (Sailor) used a couple of times, and Profession (Brewer) used once.
