PCs blatant display of gruesome trophy lands him in hot water?

Shackled City Adventure Path

I just ran the first part of Life's Bazaar. One of the PCs removed the head of one of the Last Laugh thugs that assaulted the priest at the beginning. After they pried information from Patches the PC posted a message at the (pavillion place near the lake, the name escapes me) stating his name and his knowledge of the Last Laugh and that they are not safe from him. A fair amount of bravado from a PC that is young and knows nothing of whom he speaks, he then nailed his "trophy" next to the message.

I dont have the book with me, but Ive been thinking about the possible ramifications for his actions. Arent those thugs members of the town guard? Obvious affiliations to the Last Laugh aside, should I have him arrested for the death of a member of the town guard? Obviously I will make the Last Laugh a constant thorn in his side, but Im not sure where to take it from there.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Don't characters with attitude make the game fun? The real question is, what are you gonna do if he does the same thing to every opponent he defeats?

I would have him arrested by Sergeant Krewis and charged with murder by Captain Terseon Skellerang. Then, perhaps Jenya puts her reputation on the line to vouch for the player, thus putting him in her debt.

And later in the campaign, Triel Eldurast can make some biting remarks along the lines of "Don't you see? We're the same, you and I..."

I'm always tempted to start drawing the PC toward evil, then taking control of the character and making them an archenemy NPC. Of course, if you really want to punish him, try having an entire gang of Last Laugh thugs catch your PC alone. Fun!

I say let it slide. Give him bonuses to Intimidation checks, but make most in town hostile or at least unfriendly to him.

Just when you wonder why he hasn't been arrested, present a summons from Orbius Vhalantru. He's sympathetic to the bold actions, but warns that it may not look very good if he want's to present a good face to the town, adn receive future adventuring contracts.

And oh yes. . . Lord Vhanantru mentions that may have a way to channel some of the young lad's good-natured agression . . . after all, Jenya needs alot of help saving the city, but she might be a little stingy on money or supplies. Vhalanru could say that he'll "stick his neck out" to help the PCs stay out of trouble. He supports their freedom to enforce the only brand of justice that works with evildoors and vagabonds like these men. Maybe a deputy-ship is in the works? To go even further, perhaps he'll offer rewards for any good deeds done for the city. Perhaps he could even help equip them for greater challenges? For instance, what are you up to now? Can I help you with that? What kind of creatures are you facing? What have you discovered so far? He might be able to provide some extra healing potions, or a protection from energy scroll or two, just "be specific about your needs". . .

Depth, depth, depth!! Awesome, ingenious, evil and beautiful, all at the same time. Oh man...this is going to be great! Thanks for the tips, guys.

That would be neat to have Vhalantru using the party to take out his competition while pretending to be benevolent.

The only problem I can foresee with the party being sponsored by Vhalantru, is that he typically invites adventurers back to his place and 'cashes them out' by turning them into lawn statues. What's to keep him from doing that this time around?

Im not sure about the Vhalantru angle, but I do have something devious planned. The same PC mentioned above began a relationship with a female dwarf working in one of the taverns. He has visited her often and been seen around town with her.

Im thinking the Last Laugh will pay her a visit on his next dungeon foray.

"Im sorry...all we found was this note and locke of hair."

Yes..Im giggling. Almost a cackle....
