Dungeon Magazine General Discussion

I was wondering how one might submit artwork for publication in either of your fine magazines.

Would submitted artwork help or hinder a submitted adventure from being published?

Dear Timault,

Our artwork is 100% commissioned (meaning we don't publish anything we haven't specifically requested) and any artwork submitted with an adventure will be admired and then discarded.

If you wish to illustrate for the magazines, the best way to go about doing so is to submit a digital portfolio to Art Director Sean Glenn at sean.glenn@paizo.com, but be warned that we use professionals exclusively, and then only the best of the best - if you can't flip open the magazines at random and match the quality of any illustration on that page, it probably isn't worth your time to submit. That said, if you can, we're always looking for quality new artists.

Good luck!

This is kind of tangent, but do the authors have any input on the art order for their respective modules? I'm sure many of the authors developed strong visual images in their mind when writing their adventures (I certainly do when I write). Just curious.

Nope. It's just not feasible, given the breakneck pace of the magazines. Plus, remember that the people writing the art order have done quite a few of them before (and know exactly how many/what size illustrations a piece has been allotted), so in general everybody's better off leaving the matter entirely in their hands. (From what I've heard, both scriptwriting and most novel publication works in the same manner.)

Let's also not forget that this way you get to be surprised by the visuals that accompany your adventure, and see how someone like James Jacobs imagines your characters! ; )

Makes sense. Congratulations on the promotion, btw.

Thanks!

James, thanks for the quick reply.

To be honest, my drawing and painting days are long gone. But I have an acquaintance in Romania who is extremely talented and has been doing work for my gaming group. I think he definitely has the caliber of talent that we're all looking for in Dungeon and Dragon magazines.

If anyone is interested you can check out his work at:

Mr Sutter. Paizo NEEDS this artist doing submissions for them. His name is Reilly Brown and he's done some work for Marvel Comics. Here's his website http://www.oddgodpress.com/reillybrown/

His color gallery is here. http://www.oddgodpress.com/reillybrown/color/index.html

As a gift to my players, I had him do some work for me.
My 1/2 Ogre Barbarian. http://www.oddgodpress.com/reillybrown/color/ogre.html

Dwarven Cleric: Notice the animated shield http://www.oddgodpress.com/reillybrown/color/dwarf.html

Dwarven Barbarian: http://www.oddgodpress.com/reillybrown/color/berserker.html

Human Ranger: +1 Flame Tounge Greatsword
http://www.oddgodpress.com/reillybrown/color/ranger.html

Human Rouge: +3 Flame whip

This guy is GOOD and he can deliver everything you ask for. You seriously NEED to contact this guy.

Holy Crap-

While I like the Second referral as well- the avatarart fellow's work is PHENOMENAL!

Kudos to you both for helping make the lives of the Paizo staff a little easier.
