Gamer Connection

My name is Chris Wissel, and I have recently learned that I will be moving to Galveston, TX from Indianapolis, IN (I am moving the weekend of GenCon, ironically).

I bring many things to the table, including 20+ years of experience, a good knowledge of the rules, a desire to DM, and oftentimes. . . ice cold beer.

I know very few people in Galveston, and I would like to join a current game, or perhaps start a new one with fresh players. Please let me know if you are interested by responding to this posting, or e-mailing me at weaslfish@yahoo.com

Thanks for your interest.

Welcome to Texas, Chris. Unfortunately I live up in Killeen, so that's to far away for weekly gaming purposes, but it's nice to know you're in the area. There are a few cons around the Lone Star State, so maybe I'll catch you around there. If nothing else, it'll be nice to commiserate with a fellow Mid-Western transplant about all these cray Texans.

Kinky Friedman for Governor in 06! Willie Nelson as Secretary of Transportation! Kinky for Gov...Why the Hell Not?

Thanks, man. I've been online in meet-up forums, etc. looking for groups, with no luck. Something will turn up eventually once I get there. . . it always does. As far as Cons go, I'll be attending a few, I'm sure. I heard that OwlCon in Houston is a good one.

On a side note, despite the great opportunites we now have in Galveston, I am B-I-T-T-E-R about missing GenCon. I am literally going to miss the entire thing. It's a shame, since there are quite a few online people I wanted to meet this year, including any Paizo staff attending.

Ah well. . . Life should always intrude on D&D, and not the other way around.

See you around Texas, Gav!

*bumpty-bump!*

I'm still looking. . .

Incidentally, in case there is a lurker or two checking out this post, there is a local gaming store in Galveston called the Chimera's Den. If you're from there, well. . . you probably know about it. What you may NOT know, is that the owner, Chris, has a cool website up with a gaming forum. I've posted a couple of things myself, but there are only 5 registered users, so there are very few to repsond.

If you are shy to use Paizo, log on there instead and contact me. Did I mention the beer? :)

I was born in Killeen.

Texas is very hot. and Galveston suffers from extreme humidity, so be prepared.

Were you a 'military brat'? I'm one of 'those damn contractors' that works up at Hood (Cultural Resource Management).

Killeen isn't a bad town... and it's grown a lot in the couple of years, but like a lot of military towns, it's not so much a community as a cluster of ammeneties. Nice thing is it's only an hour north of Austin, so if you want to swing down and see Reverend Horton Heat or Bob Snyder or Monte Montgomery playing it's a quick trip.

Is anyone born in Killeen that ISN'T a military brat? I'm sure there are, but probably not many.

Yes, my dad was at Fort Hood at the time. We moved early enough that I don't really remember Killeen at all. Then my dad got out of the Army and became a grad student... which involves a different sort of moving around.

I live up at Hood and I was looking for a group to join in on aswell, I just started playing about 5 months ago so I'm still really new but loved the game. I'm all about the cleric something about being the unspoken hero, ya know healin the fighter while he takes on the brutes heh. I'm hoping to find a good DM someday!

That would be me! :) Just kidding.

I checked out the old google map, and it looks like we'd have to share part of a 4 hour commute for you to play with me in Galveston. Shucks.

As Gav stated earlier, maybe we can hang at a Con or something in the future. I'm learning that Texas is just a maaasssssiiivvveee state, and I could fit about 7 Indiana's inside it's borders. Staggering!

Anyway, I hope things work out for you, dude. Maybe Gav and Ashavan have some tips on a gaming store in town. Good luck.

Book Stan' is a great comics/gaming store (on Fort Hood Road, just north of Business 190). Earl and Syndey are your completely affable store clerks and good buddies of mine.

Slaughterhouse Games is down on Elms Road in the strip mall just past the strip clubs. They are almost completely wargaming, though.

Hey, lucky for you there is a large gaming community down in that general area. I do not know about on Galveston itself, but definitely within 30 minutes driving.

Please note, in the Houston area, which includes Galveston, 30 minutes is a reasonable drive. I live in Spring, which is on the north side of Houston and my gaming group currently meets in Baytown, on the east side of Houston. My drive is approximately 45 minutes by freeway. A bit far sometimes, but it's the DM's priviledge. When I run, they have to drive to my house.

Go to Yahoo! Groups and find the group named clag_houston. CLAG stands for Clear Lake Area Gamers and covers everyone living along I-45 heading south out of Houston. They are heavy into RPGA Living Greyhawk and should be a good resource for D&D players in the general area you will be living in.

Welcome to the Gulf Coast! Make sure you have working air conditioning and a comfortable car!

(And I really mean it about the air conditioning...)

I strongly recommend support for the friendly local gaming store. So shop Chimera's Den when your in the area. They look pretty cool on their website - I'll have to check them out next time I go to the beach.

But if you make it up I-45 to the NASA area, take the El Dorado Blvd exit and head east about a block or so (a right turn coming from Galveston). In a strip center on the north side of the road (on the left coming from I-45) is Horizon Games. They have a large number of tables and a very broad selection of games and minis. Plus, many of the CLAG guys shop there.

(Or at least they did the last time I was there, three to four months ago. Again, I live way on the north side of Houston, but I make it down there on occasion.)

Chris,

I sent you an e-mail about this, but I just realized that it is "quite" likely that I may end up in the Houston area in 3-6 years when I retire from my current job. One of my old bosses is now a big Kahuna for a major public sector entity in the Houston area and has already offered me a job. I turned it down, but he told me he'd have more openings down the road.

...not like gaming with me is a MAJOR privilege or anything, but I do homebrew!!

Homebrew rulz. SO do I. . . when you get down here, we'll have to fight over DMing duties!

Thanks for the E-mail. I have about 150 in my inbox, and haven't tackled them yet. . . I didn't realize you 've been in Texas all this time. It's funny. . . every time I squint my beady little eyes at the Texas map, I am still amazed that you guys keep this entire land area as a single state. Truly amazing. El Paso is a major journey away. . . might as well be Pensacola, Florida. :)

Thanks Patrick. Someone else on the Enworld 'boards mentioned the store in Clear Lake. A half an hour was less than my Indianapolis day job, so that's no problem. RIght now, I'm a little behind on things. I still haven't made it to the Den yet either, as the moving and orientation has taken longer than I thought.

Also, someone here in town has offered to commute with me to a game in Clear Lake via another E_mail messageboard. . . might be someone you know. I haven't responded yet, as I have a ton of E-mails, but I'm planning on it.

Happy gaming, dude. Thanks for the information, and see you around!

There'd be no fight, you can DM. I've been DMing 80% of the time since 1982....I want to play!

Well, I thought I'd *bump* this again. . . to see if there were any new players on these boards. In the meantime, I've been working on a D20 Modern/Past campaign, initially inspired by Patrick Walsh's "Kilamajaro Safari" on the Campaign Journal thread.

In the meantime, I have posted an ad for my campaign, to be found on my blog at http://quixoticagenda.blogspot.com/. If you are from the area, and wanna play, give me a holler.

Otherwise, check out Patrick's campagin journal. It's very cool.
