I have a 5th level witch and i never used her familiar as anything other than a spellbook. I have always kept the familiar in my bag or in my clothes, not really paying attention to it's HP or anything like that. I am finally in a game where i am using my familiar and we are going into an area with no-pets allowed. So, the question is how far can i be away from my familiar and still be able to use spells and hexes?

With your familiar not near you , you lose any extra spells it grants, as the arcane bond, so you won't have the extra spell cast, and you probably need to make concentration checks to cast spells.
You can use any spells prepared, as normal, but, since your familiar is away, you won't be able to prepare any new spells, or replace any used.

Nothing really happens if you're familiar is far away (though you can only use empathic link up to 1 mile). You just can't prepare new spells (but you can still use all your currently prepared spells until they are exhausted).

Witch familiars don't grant extra spells, do they
Not as such. They automatically get your patron spells as you gain in levels, but after that you prepare them as normal. If you've already prepared one, you keep it until you cast it whether your familiar is handy or not.
Basically, in most (but not all) respects, they're a living spellbook. A wizard can leave her spellbook at home if she won't need to prepare any additional spells while she's away, and if someone toasts her spellbook (or the witch's familiar), she can still cast the spells she has prepared, but she won't be able to prepare new ones.
